I don't like Foster, but I do like Pine and like the director so I'll give it a shot at some point, looks decent.

Re: Hell or High Water -- D: Mackenzie S: Foster, Pine, Bridges -- 2016
Saw this last night. One of the best movies of the year. A certainty to be in my Top 10, likely top 5.
I couldn't help but think of No Country for Old Men while watching this. The West Texas setting, the heavy southern drawls of the characters, an old timer (Jeff Bridges here, Tommy Lee Jones in NCfOM) chasing after someone, etc. These two would make for great back to back viewing. The biggest difference between the two is there's more humor in this film.
The acting was great. Pine and Bridges have never been better. I've never disliked Pine, but he's growing on me. Like him quite a bit. Seems like a cool dude in real life too. Foster wasn't bad, he was just fine, but he didn't stand out as much as the other two leads.
Is it better than Sicario? Eh, that's up for debate, but I'd give the edge to HoHW. The characters and the humor of this one would make me pick it.
No Country for Old Men of course went on to win Best Picture, Best Director, Adapted SP, and Supporting Actor....not sure the Academy will view Hell or High Water in the same light, but I hope it at least gets a handful of nominations.
Definitely recommended.
Grade: A

Saw it. Definitely one of the year's best, especially in acting and script. Bridges, Pine, and Foster all give great performances , with Pine doing his best work ever. Music is pretty good to boot. Story is pretty simple which leaves most of the focus on the characters. Worth seeing at some point, and I hope it isn't forgotten come awards season.

Fantastic script. GREAT, natural dialogue. Also Oscar worthy.

Surprisingly deep supporting characters that really make the world feel real.

We liked it. Great script. Every actor in a bit part got to play a real character. ("You boys must be new at this." "If you can find the tree.")
The movie is full of firearms. Many people have a concealed-carry permit. Then the movie explores what it means to have a heavily armed population, without celebrating it or condemning it. I wonder if this movie will make sense in Europe.
The frame rate was slow at our theater. The opening shot was a slow pan that strobed really unpleasantly. Did anyone else see something like that?
Everyone else in the theater was another grey-haired couple, and most of them watched the end credits. It looks like we are smack dab in the middle of their target audience.
If No Country hadn't been a hit, this movie would never have been made.

I really appreciated that there were no villains in the movie. Well, maybe the banker. But he wasn't a powerful villain, just a sharper. It was more a situation in which people find themselves working against each other because of circumstances.
There are no characters who are really unsympathetic. You can see the merit in everyone's view.
I don't think the producer is much impressed with the amateur law enforcers, since they do more property damage than damage to the "bad guys" they are chasing. Although, it is a great modern version of the Old West townspeople putting together a posse to chase the robbers. Pickup trucks instead of horses, that's all.
Although set in modern day, the action and characters are quite traditional. The nostalgia appeal is strong, and there are some scenes that are there just as treats for the target audience. (old fogies) At one point the 21st century makes a rude intrusion, and gets its ass handed to it. I loved that.
Where No Country for Old Men was about how the world has changed, this movie is about how it hasn't. Some of the players have changed, but the struggle is the same. Taking care of your family, and surviving in a world that doesn't care if you do or not. Staying Human in the process.

I hadn't heard of this at all but I opened this thread today on my day off, saw it was playing near me in ten minutes for a first-showing-of-the-day matinee price, and I thought, let's go for it. Took a chance you all know what you're talking about and turns out, you're right. This is a great movie. Suspenseful, and the violence was brutal (mostly because you never knew who would get it). Loved the story and the backdrop of desperation is brilliant. Love the paced and the back story that comes in pieces.

Something like a cross between No Country For Old Men and Mud. Excellent film. The last verbal exchange at the end of the movie between actor A and actor B, was a thing of beauty.

This is a great, accurate description of the film.
I really liked it. I thought 2009's Armored tried to touch on the economic crisis affecting people who wouldn't normally consider robbery, but this film does it almost perfectly, with a deft hand involving humor, very real violence and consequences, and characters who are all fully formed.
My main gripe is the stupid trope that also kept End of Watch from being a masterpiece,
Overall very good.

The best reviewed film of the year, certified 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, is CBS Film’s brilliant “Hell or High Water.”The sleeper hit will cross $12 million this weekend and start earning money, a rarity among original non-comic book movies or sequels.
“Hell or High Water” stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as a pair of bank robbing brothers with a purpose, to rob branches of the Texas Midland bank which has threatened to foreclose on their family ranch. Luck was on their side until Texas Ranger Marcus, (the sublime Jeff Bridges) makes it his mission to catch them as his last crowning achievement before his soon-to-be retirement.
Directed by Scotland native David Mackenzie and written by Taylor Sheridan, (who also wrote “Sicario”) this film had me from the first scene. I loved it because it’s a true artistic hybrid; a cerebral bank heist combined with “Bonnie and Clyde” and Westerns of lore. The complicated camaraderie and the love between the troubled brothers along with the action-thriller elements, has made this my favorite film of the year so far. Look for nominations all around for the mega talented threesome, as well as shout outs to Gil Birmingham as Marcus’s long suffering half Comanche partner Alberto Parker and Katy Mixon (who played Melissa McCarthy’s quippy sister on the just ended “Mike And Molly” sitcom) as the loyal, sassy waitress.
