TIME’s Richard Corliss has assembled a rich multimedia slideshow of his choices for the 25 best animated features of all-time. Each movie gets a fine tribute from Corliss illustrated with clips. 25. Lady and the Tramp (1955) 24. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) 23. Yellow Submarine (1968) 22. Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! (2008) 21. Kung Fu Panda (2008) 20. Paprika (2007) 19. Tangled (2010) 18. The Lion King (1994) 17. Akira (1988) 16. Happy Feet (2006) 15. Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) 14. The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) 13. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) 12. Toy Story (1995) 11. Toy Story 3 (2010) 10. The Little Mermaid (1989) 9. Finding Nemo (2003) 8. The Triplets of Belleville (2003) 7. Up (2009) 6. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) 5. Spirited Away (2001) 4. Dumbo (1941) 3. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie (1979) 2. WALL-E (2008) 1. Pinocchio (1940) I think I would toss The Iron Giant in there somewhere...and maybe Beauty and the Beast. |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 are all too high (and I like them). I like seeing Tangled on there, even though it's too high for my list. Happy Feet is the only complete joke on it.

Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
No Brad Bird, period — no Iron Giant, Incredibles, or Ratatouille, that is — just blows my mind.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Yeah, I'd place those 3 above most of those listed.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
The Incredibles should definitely be on the list, and near the top. WALL-E and Up are way overrated.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is another glaring omission. Overall, I give this list a big :thmbsdwn: |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Horton Hears a Who and Tangled? Are you kidding me?
Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia deserve to be on the list |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
They should have removed the 3 Anime films off and called the list the 25 best english language cartoons. Akira,Spirited Away and Paprika are not even close to being the best anime flicks but they are 3 of the most well known and were just put there for token inclusion.
:thmbsdwn: No Incredibles, Mary and Max,Beauty and the beast,Watership Down and the best of the three Toy Story movies being excluded. |

:thmbsdwn: No Incredibles, Mary and Max,Beauty and the beast,Watership Down and the best of the three Toy Story movies being excluded. But yeah, really weird selections on the list although I was happy to see South Park make it. |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Yeah, there's just way too much missing from that list for me to wrap my brain around, and the inclusion of Happy Feet and Horton Hears a Who (and Tangled, though I still like it) over a lot of the stuff already mentioned in this thread is simply coconuts.

Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Toy Story 2, Ratatouille and Beauty and the Beast are the BIG omissions for me. I'm very surprised Bambi wasn't listed as well.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Yeah, I'd have TS2 above both the others. I don't really get the love for Beauty and the Beast though.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
I'd probably include Bug's Life and Winnie-the-Pooh in there somewhere.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Horton Hears A Fucking Who!? Really?
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Iron Giant and Mask of the Phantasm need to be in there.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
I agree with #1 but Dumbo, I mean really?
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
 to Spirited Away making the list
 to Toy Story, Toy Story 3, no Incredibles and Toy Story 2 Also, Paprika? If we're going off animated feature trailers, sure, actual movie? not so much. |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
No Fantasia?
The Lion King probably wouldn't have made my list since I rank it below Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Since I think Ratatouille is Pixar's best, naturally I'm not happy to see it excluded. And I concur with the questions about no Toy Story 2 while the others made it. At least if it was just the first one, I could understand. I actually liked Happy Feet, but I wouldn't have put it on the list. |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Grave of the fireflies should be on that joke of a list.
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Not a very historically (or geographically) astute list, but it's just someone's personal favorites, so whatever...
|
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
The Bugs Bunny/Roadunner Movie?? It's just a few of the regular Bugs Bunny cartoons strung together. Sad Iron Giant isn't on there. If Horton's on it, then Giant deserves a spot higher than it.

Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
No "Secret OF Nimh"?!

:thmbsdwn: No Incredibles, Mary and Max,Beauty and the beast,Watership Down and the best of the three Toy Story movies being excluded. And a serious thumbs down for not including Iron Giant. |
Re: TIME magazine 25 best animated features of all-time
Some of the picks on that list are pretty good but there are a few on there where it seems like he just picked a random popular animated movie that came out recently. I mean come on Horton Hears a Who, Kung Fu Panda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Happy Feet really belong on a best of all time list? I mean they're decent enough movies but I wouldn't put them on a best of all time list. I'd throw Aladdin on there and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm personally.

I really got to check out Paprika. I heard about it in the past. But it slipped my mind. Trailer is great.
