Peter Falk (Columbo) dies at 83
Peter Falk, TV's rumpled Columbo, has died The best way to celebrate Peter Falk's life is to savor how Columbo, his signature character, fortified our lives. Thanks to Falk's affectionately genuine portrayal, Lt. Columbo established himself for all time as a champion of any viewer who ever felt less than graceful, elegant or well-spoken. Falk died Thursday at age 83 in his Beverly Hills, Calif., home, according to a statement released Friday by family friend Larry Larson. In a court document filed in December 2008, Falk's daughter Catherine Falk said her father was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. ---------- One of my favorite actors of all time. :( But we knew he was not doing well for the last few years. I know Columbo was his famous role, but to me I will remember him for his great role in Wings of Desire.

I've got Wings of Desire, picked up from an earlier B&N sale, to look forward to.
For me, however, my favorite Falk roles, besides Columbo of course, will be as the out of control CIA agent in The In-Laws and the small time crook who stumbles across the mother of all scores in The Brink's Job (which bizarrely has never been released on DVD in R1). Two great, very entertaining films made shortly after the initial run of Columbo ceased production. But he was one of those select few who made just about anything worth watching by his presence alone. |

Yeah it will always be 'The In Laws' for me.
That's basically a perfect movie. Just amazing. 'The Brinks Job' is fantastic too, Friedkin does good work. I used to watch on HBO a lot way back when. |

I first saw him in IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. He was great in that as one of the two cabdrivers who are the last to get caught up in the mad dash to find the money. Then I saw him as one of the "bad" gangsters opposing the Rat Pack in ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS. And then he turned up as Jack Lemmon's bumbling assistant in THE GREAT RACE. I saw all of these in theaters within one year (1965). He's also good in the WWII movie, CASTLE KEEP (1969). He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for MURDER INC. (1960).
Plus everything that was already mentioned. I watched the first few eps. of "Columbo" when that series debuted, but I got tired of the formula. Falk was great but the murderers were always high-profile, high-powered people, like generals and captains of industry and celebrities, all played by great guest stars. Yet Columbo never went after psychopaths or serial killers or nutjobs or career criminals or malcontents who just lost control and killed somebody. They were always pillars of the community who found it convenient to murder someone and try to get away with it. It was as if every week there was a murder committed by a bold-faced name from the gossip or society pages of L.A. newspapers. And the actual criminals left everyone alone. |

I will really miss this man.
Growing up, my father and I would watch the Sunday night "NBC Mystery Movie". Columbo was always my favorite. To this day the series is still one of my top 5 favorite TV off all time. My he Rest In Peace. Oh, one more thing... |

At 3 he had one eye removed because of cancer. “When something like that happens early,” he said in a 1963 Associated Press interview, “you learn to live with it. It became the joke of the neighborhood. If the umpire ruled me out on a bad call, I’d take the fake eye out and hand it to him.” When Falk was starting as an actor in New York, an agent told him, “Of course, you won’t be able to work in movies or TV because of your eye.” Falk would later win two Oscar nominations (”Murder, Inc.,” 1960; “Pocketful of Miracles,” 1961) and collect five Emmys, beginning with his first Emmy for “The Price of Tomatoes” in 1961. His four other Emmys were for “Columbo.” He had converted it into a studio where he created charcoal drawings. He took up art in New York when he was in the Simon play and one day happened into the Art Students League. He recalled: “I opened a door and there she was, a nude model, shoulders back, a light from above, buck-ass naked. The female body is awesome. Believe me, I signed up right away.”

I just remembered another great film of his--and one not mentioned yet here, nor in the New York Times obit--THE CHEAP DETECTIVE (1978), written by Neil Simon. It's a satirical mash-up of CASABLANCA and THE MALTESE FALCON and Falk's Sam Diamond combines a little of Rick with a lot of Sam Spade. It's hilarious and holds up very well. He's also great as a Sam Spade type in MURDER BY DEATH, also written by Simon.

One of my old school favorites who I havnt thought of in a while. They say he'd been sick for years, it even prevented one last Columbo return.
Anyway, for those moderately interested, in so far as the Columbo series itself is concerned, the 2nd season is a good place to start. And best wishes to Peter's family & friends. I believe he will be missed. |

Peter Falk appeared in more than 50 films and so is remembered by many a film-buff, but above all and to millions of TV fans, he is, or rather was, the titular and irascible, rumpled and eccentric Los Angeles police detective: the homicide cop Lieutenant Frank Columbo. For this role he won four Emmy awards. Falk died on 24 June at 83 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. There is something especially cruel about knowing that a mind-robbing disease like Alzheimer's was what took Falk's life. He was still acting until 2009 and he experienced death, or so it was reported, in a peaceful way. In all of his roles, but especially Columbo, his was always the most perspicacious face on screen. Keenly intelligent and watchful, he was a warmer, a menschier(you might want to look that word up), a more humble Sherlock Holmes, a man whose mind operated on a higher level than most of his police associates and others in that who-dun-it world loved by millions and watched, arguably now. by billions every week. Part 2: Dana Stevens wrote in the online magazine Slate(1) that nothing got by Peter Falk and his hyper-alert vigilance always seemed to emerge from an underlying stillness, a state of openness to his fellow actors and to the moment. Stevens talked about Falk’s films and special scenes in the films, scenes that highlighted his talents. I’ll let you read her fine obit about the Peter Falk she remembers: a man who doggedly felt his way to the truth, that is the truth about the fictional murder of the week, and the truth of the scene. Squinting at his interlocutor with his one good eye, and listening, Falk came into our worlds week after week.
