Not bad, but soft for a Marvel opening. Should hold good next weekend, but it'll probably sink fast when GL opens.

Looks like Thor should finish north of $175m.

$53 million isn't bad, but a drop off from past films in the franchise.

X-Men: $54.4 million
X2: $85.6 million
X3: $102.8 million
Wolverine: $85 million

I think most were expecting more ($60 million + opening weekend), but I'm surprised it wasn't less due to Fox's lack of advertising-slash-shit advertising.

The drops are big this weekend for Hangover, Kung Fu Panda and Pirates. Once the weekend is over, we'll be looking at 50-55% for Kung Fu Panda, 55-60% for Hangover, and 60-65% for Pirates. Yikes. Gotta love word of mouth and lack of 2D screens!

Good to see Fast Five break $200 million.

Good to see Woody Allen dominating on under 150 screens too.

Bridesmaids getting over 100.

I was hoping Thor could hold on for 2, but that would take a long time.

This time last week, I thought that Kung Fu Panda 2 would have a small drop this weekend due to good word of mouth. D'oh. That movie's domestic box office really puzzles me. Sure, the advertising was bad, but I didn't think it was that bad.

Great for Fast Five and Bridesmaids. Good but not great for First Class.

I wish Kung Fu Panda 2 was doing better; that's honestly one of the best movies i've seen all year.

I wonder if First Class's BO take was adversely affected by the general crappiness of Wolverine and X3... the "Oh No Even MORE of This Shit??" effect that hobbled Batman Begins (although WOM pushed that film from a $40 mill opening to just over $200 mill, domestically).

Lack of advertising? I couldn't watch a single program without seeing a TV spot for it...

- - - > THOR < - - - is looking to finish short of $200 million. I wonder how Marvel Studios is gonna take that... the film will make money for sure, with international numbers they'll probably do close to $450mill or so, and then there's home video/ancillary revenue. Plus they've launched and positioned the property very well in the public sphere and set up a potential franchise. Not a home-run, but a game-winning RBI double for sure.

EDITED for clarity :p

I think a big part of it was also that there aren't any BIG names in the cast. When Kevin Bacon is your most recognizable face, you aren't going to be doing huge #s.

Wait, was Hokeyboy talking about X-Men or Thor? I assumed the latter since the post began about Thor finishing short of $200 million.

Uh... two separate posts that clearly begin with the movie he's talking about in each one :p

haha, I didn't see that one :p

Ignore my post then. For some reason I saw FC and saw Thor instead or something. Too many comic book movies.

Between Fast Five and Bridesmaids, Universal's having a great summer thus far.

Yup, I can see that being a factor, along with the lack of big names in this latest installment. BB had a $48.7M opening weekend though, which is in line with what First Class will make. Hopefully this will have similar word-of-mouth.

As for Thor ending up with around $175M, that's pretty decent too considering the lead is unknown other than being James Kirk's dad for ten minutes and the property is not as well known as other comic book heroes.

A bit less than I thought XMen would make, considering the pretty favorable reviews. I'm seeing it tonight.

I think the lack of a recognizable cool mutant contributed more then poor reviews of X3 and Wolverine. I don't feel the general audience hated those movies as much as the critics and internet dwellers.

I think Panda's not doing as well because of the glut of animated films all damn year so far. Studios realized how easy it was to make money off these things and it's been a constant parade of them for the last six months. Hell, if I see one more bouncing talking animal being advertised incessantly, I'm going to scream. The kids still want to see them, but I'm sure the parents at some point just have to take a break.

Well, I did my part yesterday and went to see BRIDESMAIDS, the first fiction film of 2011 that I've seen. I paid $13.50, too, and it wasn't even in 3-D!

Good movie, though. Much better than I thought it would be. Solid characters, good writing. Unlike THE HANGOVER, it was character-driven rather than plot-driven. Dramatic in parts, too. Kristen Wiig is quite amazing. First time I've ever seen her in anything. I hope she resists the pressure to make a sequel and instead writes a completely different movie for a completely different set of characters.

I think Marvel will be happy that Thor will top out at $180 mil. I mean, did anyone really expect that to reach $200 mil?

And I think X-men will have good word of mouth. I think $53 mil is a good start, especially when you consider that the last X-men movie was "Wolverine", which no one loved. Maybe First Class will be that rare Summer film in today's market that has some legs.

Problem is even X2, which also was well received, didn't have a great multiplier (2.5) and then in two weeks it has Green Lantern. Not saying GL is going to do great business, but it will cut into First Class's audience. And next week is Super 8 which is a wild card.

IMO, I think it'll nab around $145 million which isn't bad.

Me too. Well liked first movie... a sequel that is just as good (according to reviews, I haven't seen it) Something doesn't add up. I personally didn't see a lot of advertising, but it's not exactly aimed at me I suppose. Hopefully it's international take is good and doesn't jeopardize a third one happening.

"Green Latern" looks terrible.

X-Men had the major problem of coming after the maligned X3 and Wolverine. A lot of people don't read reviews for some franchises and just think "another one?" Following what many considered two stink bombs is never easy. I think the reason good movies can underperform is general lack of interest.
