saw this tonight .... grew up a big UXM fan (Claremont/Byrne) and would rank X2 as my favorite comic to movie adaptation to date

.... that said, I don't get all the high praise for First Class .... some good moments but overall I was very underwhelmed

Poor Matthew Vaughn, looks like "X-Men: First Class" will top off around the 150M mark. About the same as the original made in 2000. And, as everyone knows, #2 and #3 did 214M and 234M ("Wolverine" did 179M). Also, I think Vaughn's only two previous commercials films were also grossly unnoticed at the U.S. box-office. With "Stardust" making just 38M and "Kick-Ass" making only 48M. So far, I think he's been a remarkable director.

I don't think he's a remarkable director, Stardust was painful to sit through and Kick-ass, while very entertaining, didn't have the best filmmaking in the world. Still he shows promise. That said, Kick-ass is a very popular movie, should it actually get the sequel it deserves that should be fairly successful.

Stardust was The Princess Bride for a new generation. I loved every minute of it.

We all make mistakes.

So tell me, what did you think of "The Brides of Madison County"?

It's not as good as Seven Bridges For Seven Brothers.

Saw it late Friday night with an almost full house. My Wife and I loved it. Magneto/Fassbender was fuckin' amazing....Magneto is one of may favorite Marvel characters and what I saw of him was great.

The Sub/Magneto scene took my breath away....

Yeah, the sub sequence was terrific. This was a solid all-around movie with a few flaws. But it's the best thing I've seen so far this year. Very much looking forward to revisiting it on BD. The film is slowly chugging along at the box office, but it's starting to run out of steam. I'm hoping it can at least get to around $140 mil and I really hope Fox will allow a sequel. I'd love to see a full length movie with Fassbender as Magneto.

I just hope they write the X kids a lot better...I hated their scenes. just mediocre dialogue and the stuff they did was cliche. While Magneto, Xavier (for most part), and Shaw were pretty solid.

That I've heard.

Don't forget to go catch "Bridgemaids" before it leaves theaters.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Finally caught this on Friday in a theater that was completely empty except for myself and a friend. It was the second showing of the day, and the ticket person mentioned that nobody had shown up for the first one.

As for the movie itself, it was decent but nothing phenomenal like I'd been led to believe. Everything about it seemed uneven, especially the performances. Fassbender was terrific as expected, and some of the action sequences were well done. I came away not disappointed but not awed either.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Overall I enjoyed this one, and I would probably put it somewhere below the series. I think that X-men as a franchise is on it's last leg and given the exceptional early entries into the series, it may be hard to top. Wolverine and this film proved that, and it somewhat feels a bit tired. Some of the actors (mainly the kids) were hard to connect to. The fact that they included some second string characters (even third string) is something I would normally appreciate, but for me, it doesn't work here. And, not that I am always looking for a-list stars as I recognize that unknowns or new actors can be fantastic, however the lack of familiar faces was a bit jarring. Besides Fassbender and McAvoy, (who I didn't always love), there were few actors performances that I enjoyed. Jones, Bacon (who were both deliciously evil), and Byrne, I really didn't love the rest of the performances, (though I probably am forgetting someone. I will say that I missed some decent action or fight scenes (as we have become accustomed to with the deluge of recent films featuring at least two or three fight sequences). I definitely expected Jones' Emma Frost to go diamond and kick some serious ass a la Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2, but all she really got to do was*
Spoiler:
kick Erik off a boat
. The villains felt really random with no background, or any explanation as to who they were. It was nice seeing a tele porter on screen again but whenever that wind guy came on I really was wondering who he was and I just wanted to go WTF? The end scene with the boat was probably my favorite part of the movie and was really entertaining and revived some of the fun from the earlier X-men films. I know the continuity thing has been an issue, but it is my opinion that if they are bothering to make a prequel they should have it fit in to the existing continuity, (they copied the whole flippin' sequence from the opening of x-men, so why not?) especially when the director from the originals is on board. Not connecting directly to X3 is understandable in a way as Singer didn't direct it but still it exists and was a pretty decent success financially if I remember correctly. They can't just ignore otherwise they should have just done a reboot so they could do whatever they want which this may be but it isn't really clear... I did like that MacTaggert got to do something when she*
Spoiler:
pulled out the gun and fired at Erik
and the whole*
Spoiler:
"I CAN'T FEEL MY LEGS" caught me off guard
and I really enjoyed that. The thing I didn't like was Angel and the handling of her character, but if that was what happened in the comics, I guess that's okay. If it seems like I went in with negative thoughts, that is partially true, I honestly thought the actors (besides Bacon, of course) couldn't deliver and carry the movie, and the lack of familiarity had me but the positive reviews got me to the theater and overall it was an enjoyable X-outing. I am sure over time these nitpicks won't bother me as much and due to my "gotta catch 'em all" Blu-ray problem I'll see it again and I'll probably like it more after repeat viewings, (it's happened before with me). Right now I'll go w/ a 3/5.*

PS I also didn't love Lawrence, and the child actors

PSS My goodness! Sorry for the rant :0

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Finally got around to watching this today. I really liked it and was quite entertained but have to admit coming away just a tad disappointed because it seemed like it had potential to be great. Xavier, Magneto, Shaw & Mystique were all great but it seemed they really scraped the bottom of the Marvel barrel with some of the other (and less interesting) characters. I gave it 3.5 stars out of 5...just a tad less then 4.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it Friday and thought it was quite good. Could it have been better ... sure but I can say that about every movie.

It was completely different than most comic based movies as this one actually tried to inform you of the characters, their beliefs, their reasons for doing what they do.

I thought the wolverine cameo felt totally out of place and just kind of tossed in there.

Both leads were excellent and so was Kevin Bacon as the villain.

Overall a well done movie but not a 5 star flick - I would give it about 4 stars.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Had a free ticket from the BluRay set and saw it again last night. The real X-Men stuff holds up just as well if not better on a repeat viewing, but all the flaws (read: the c-list supporting players and January Jones) are just as infuriating.

I will add, whoever greenlit the Banshee casting and visual effects should be fired. Horrible on both fronts.

With any luck this'll be the last we hear from Matthew Vaughn for a while. Kickass was cute but basically a B-movie... and then he gets handed the keys to the X-Men franchise? No wonder this movie sucked. SO BORING.

Not everyone shares that opinion.

I hope he sticks with the franchise for awhile, as this was easily on par with X-Men 2 and will probably hold up longer for me.

I'd say the box office numbers disagree with *you*

You can always tell how good or bad a movie is *within its genre* by the box office. Green Lantern will not make enough to merit a sequel. And XMFC? Kind of a bummer, by the numbers. Why?

It sucketh. Easily the worst of the X-Mens, and one of the worst superhero movies since Daredevil.

Hopefully Captain America is decent.

Surely you're not judging a movie's quality by the box office? Right?
