Weekend Box Office (5/20 - 5/22): The Rapture Is No Contender for Johnny Depp

In North America today, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is looking to open soft in the mid-$30s million helped by higher 3D ticket prices. That translates into a $90M weekend. But the 2011 Summer Movie Season has seen higher-than-expected Saturday attendance by family audiences which could increase grosses. Right now, Pirates 4 is trailing Pirates 3, but that was to be expected in the U.S. and Canada given that reviews so far have been mediocre coming on the heels of fan disappointment with the franchise's 2007 threequel. As for the Top Five Friday, #2 is Universal's holdover Bridesmaids only down 35%, #3 Marvel/Disney/Paramount's Thor down -59% starting its 3rd week, #4 Universal's Fast Five down -50%, and #5 Blue Sky Studio/Fox's Rio keeping the kiddies.
Based off Deadline's estimates, this would mean our Friday grosses will look like:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, $35 million
2. Bridesmaids, $5.1 million
3. Thor, $3.8 million
4. Fast Five, $3 million
5. Rio, $1.3 million (if kept at the same 17-20% drop that it faced last Friday)

I tried to see BRIDESMAIDS last night. The two shows that would have fit my schedule were sold out. So I didn't see it. I want to see it with an audience, but the way things are going I probably won't get to see it till it's at the end of its run.

I wonder if the bad WOM I'd assume P4 is getting will lead to a sharp decline next week. I have a feeling it'll stall out around $240m.

Nice hold for BRIDESMAIDS. Uni can finally be stoked.

And they weren't stoked for Fast Five or just in general for the picture itself?

I'm sure they were, but I think it was a given that was going to do well for them. They can finally be glad something is overperforming.

IDK, I think Bridesmaids was expected to be the female version of The Hangover and would get similar holds.

Re: Weekend Box Office (5/20 - 5/22): The Rapture Is No Contender for Johnny Depp

1. Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 3D (Disney) NEW [4,155 Theaters] Friday $35M, Estimated Weekend $89M

At first, a Disney exec told me Friday that IMAX grosses were "very solid" for the film, but this morning he acknowledges that 3D turned "very soft".

2. Bridesmaids (Universal) Week 2 [2,937 Theaters] Friday $6M (-24%), Estimated Weekend $22M

3. Thor 3D (Marvel/Disney/Paramount) Week 3 [3,924 Theaters] Friday $4.5M, Estimated Weekend $15.5M

4. Fast Five (Universal) Week 4 [3,622 Theaters] Friday $3M, Estimated Weekend $12M

5. Priest (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,864 Theaters] Friday $1.4M (-75%), Estimated Weekend $4.5M

Maybe studios will finally realize that audiences don't want every damn movie out there in 3D.

Uni figured it would do $20m tops OW, and I doubt they ever expected it to top THOR during the week. Either way, they've got 2 hits which is 2 more than they usually have.

That seems awfully low for POTC. Seems like the past 2 have left a bad taste in viewers mouths.

Indeed. IIRC, aren't they the only studio (big one, anyway) without a $100 million OW?

Yep. Fast Five gave them their biggest ever, and it was $14m short of that mark.

With "Thor" likely not going to make more than 175K in the U.S., will Paramount do a reboot in two years making it darker? With a new lead?

I don't think they expected THOR to do massive #s. Close to $200m domestic, and solid overseas #s, might be enough to warrant a sequel.

There has barely been any hype for Pirates. The last 2 definitely killed off the enthusiasm for the series.

I don't think Dead Man's Chest really soured people on the series. I mean, it did make $1 billion worldwide and had some good legs for a mega blockbuster, so it has its fans. I think At World's End is the one that probably caused people to walk the plank.

In its favor, it's doing gangbusters internationally and is up % wise compared to the openings of the last two Pirates.

Because Thor and Superman have absolutely nothing to do with each other except being based on a comic book character. And I'd say the expected return for Superman Returns was higher then $200 million. Just seems like a weird joke to try and make when no one is really calling Thor a disappointment.

Jesus Christ. Did I ever say the two movies had anything to do with each other? No. And please show me where anyone expected "Superman Returns" to make more than 200M. Also, I never said "Thor" was a disappointment. Nor did I say anyone else did either. I was trying to make fun of WB for being greedy. Side note, I'm going to bet the new Superman reboot doesn't make more than 200M. Maybe 250M-ish. But it certainly won't don't do "The Dark Knight" numbers.
