Well, it's all about the spectacle. We get it constantly over here, but what other country spends $200m on making 1 movie?

Yeah, but The Dark Knight was much more heavily lopsided towards domestic gross. So it's not every big movie.

International takes are only going to get bigger

Territories like Russia are aggressively expanding.

Soon, importance of US in terms of gross will become less and less relevant

Inception OS gross utterly dwarfed the US gross

Yeah TDK gross was bigger in US, but that is comic book tripe, which traditionally isn't as huge overseas as it is domestically, as its culturally irrelevant to the rest of the world

For comic book films I think maybe it has a much greater impact w/ English speaking countries or what the language can be more prominent. Considering it's origins are English language based and that which the culture itself is stemmed from and has grown into. Pirates...while popularly thought of in the English brand of pirate the aspects etc etc surrounding them are totally understood on an international basis.

I disagree. Batman -- and most American superheroes -- are as iconic in the most remote places on Earth as they are in the U.S. And American-made films so eclipse in quality anything most countries produce that a film like Iron Man, for instance, will appeal to any film fan's imagination regardless of language or country of origin. POC had three prior films to build an international following so no surprise at all to see it do so well overseas. It's not the pirates that draw the audience, it's Disney's marketing. (Likewise for Five Fast which has had four films spanning a decade to build in international following.)

It was mostly a joke about people taking something too seriously, but it seems to have only fed into it.

No.

All of the Pirates films have done better internationally than in the US, with both previous sequels doingmuch better internationally than domestically.

Honestly, the glee some of you are showing in your bashing of the new film seems just a bit over the top to me.

I think the world just loves Johnny Depp more than we do.

$90M is a much bigger domestic opening for Pirates 4 than I was expecting...

Well, then you were definitely underestimating it for no good reason. There was no way this was going to open to $50M or something.

Snake, I usually appreciate your input around here, but I have no idea what the fuck you said.

I don't know about that. A fourth installment on a franchise that most people seemed tired of, received relatively poor reviews, and didn't seem to be generating that much hype. I'm not trashing the movie; i thought it was relatively enjoyable. It's just doing way better than I figured it would.

Well I mean, I don't disagree with anything you said in terms of why it would do worse. But if you follow box office trending, tracking, etc etc it was pretty clear this film wasn't going to open THAT low. Admittedly, if you don't follow this stuff, it would probably be harder to gage that.

Still, the stuff you say is certainly correct. But I think you were perhaps not fully appreciating what $90M today is, versus say the opening of the last two films. $90M is far more than half of $135M that P2 opened to, but I bet it represents something like half as many tickets. It's that price inflation that makes me say something much lower than what this did seems rather unreasonable. Reasoning why it would be lower though...I'd say you're spot on though. Still it's probably quite a bit unfair for me to say no good reason, not everybody studies this stuff the way I and some others do.
