Cobra: The Space Pirate (2013) - (d: Alexandre Aja)

Saw this on Variety and found it interesting.

I remember the series when I was much younger.

Cobra, as it was known in Japan, is a space-opera manga series written & illustrated by Buichi Terasawa, originally running from 1978 to 1984. The screenplay was adapted by Aja's writer Grégory Levasseur. In a future where merchant spaceships and ruthless brigands sail across space, Cobra is a notorious rogue pirate whose refusal to align with the United Galaxies Federation or the Pirates Guild puts him on the business end of a huge bounty. As he tries to avoid capture, Cobra teams up with a sexy bounty hunter named Jane. It's described as a "sci-fi space opera"

If it's what I'm thinking, I remember the cartoon series. He was looking for a group of sisters with tattoos over their backs that would lead him to some treasure he was after. There was also a space pimp that would put these "seeds" in his harem girls that would make them inflate 'til they exploded. Weird ass show.

So this isn't the sequel to Stallone's Cobra?

Yup. That's the show I remember. It was a big issue here in Puerto Rico because it was a Saturday morning cartoon.

The TV series spawned a feature-length animated theatrical feature which got released here on VHS in the 1990s as SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA. It was filled with sexy, voluptuous women, as I recall.

Yup. And the show had tons of nudity. Hence why it became a rather controvercial issue here (given it was scheduled as a Saturday morning kids' show).

They also released his car as, of all things, a Go-bot over here (basically the line of original Go-bots with car windshields for heads, the futuristic looking one was Cobra's car)

Now that is a Saturday cartoon that I would sign up for.

Was this used for Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" video?

Note that this is the intro for the 2008 OVA, "Cobra The Animation: The Psychogun," which was followed by another OVA and 13-episode series.

The original 1982 TV series, which came out after the anime movie, had this intro:

So it went from Manga, to anime movie, to anime TV series, to anime OVAs, to anime TV series (again), and now to live-action movie:

Thanks for the correction. I didn't realize the 1982 movie came first and then the TV series. (It's usually the other way around in Japan.) I'd love to read the manga. I don't believe it ever came out in English.

Viz released the manga in the late 80s or early 90s translated. I believe it was split into comic book form back then. It's hard to find, haven't seen it in years. They released it around the same time Carl Macek released the movie on his his Manga Entertainment VHS Video line.

The guy in the poster looks a bit like Aja...

Sounds interesting, but I question how well he can pull it off.

I'd like to see a new Golgo 13 live action film. I still need to see Dacascos' Crying Freeman film.

I loved that this show had the balls to unflinchingly kill off the lead female love interest and then move on with business as usual.

I really like Aja's work but...this is a completely different genre than the movies I like him for. And I really like his work for how well I think he does brutal horror.

That being said...I'm curious to see how he does with this. Space Pirates don't sound bad either.
