Re: Fast Five (Fast & Furious Five) -- The Reviews and Comments Thread -- Opens 4/29/

Frankly I enjoyed it. Was it great no but tons of fun and that's what I look for in this kind of movie.

Could have used a little more car stuff (just a touch) as I find that stuff interesting but I am not "into it" but overall well done. I like the Hobbs character and look forward to a solid spin-off for it as he needs a no holds barred kick ass action franchise. I think he can definitely carry it.

Also I did find it interesting that Dom and Brian now older are the "old men" on the racing scene and thus don't really fit into that world as much. Based on that it makes sense to tone down the car stuff some. Plus as you guys already said this was more about the heist then the cars.

And no offence I am glad
Spoiler:
Vince is gone as his character was annoying to begin with IMHO. Bringing Letty back is no surprise but it does sort of "cheapen" the 4th movie though. Ehh its Hollywood, go figure.

I had a good time watching this one. I would have liked to see more car racing content but it worked well as an action flick.

Did any of the other movies explain what happened to the techie kid who drove the GTI in the first?

All I remember about the Jetta was that Frankie Muniz bought it for 100k. That idiot got ripped off.

Did he? I guess it's been a long time since I've watched it. I know they were after him for bailing when he lost the race but I don't remember him getting killed.

It was a symbolic killing. All the brains in the franchise died with him.

Well there was a heavy heist element in the first two movies.

The Fast and the Furious: Dom's crew was pulling heists and Brian was trying to figure out who was behind it and bring them down.

2 Fast 2 Furious: Brian and Roman are placed undercover on a heist run by Verona and the duo manage to steal a third (?) of the money for themselves.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was the first to not have a heist element in it. Heck, Han got offed because he was skimming the books. That's pretty smalltime for all the other stuff we now know he helped pull.

You forget the little murder he was involved in when he was in high school.

Has Justin Lin ever said either way that that Han character (in Better Luck Tomorrow) is the same from TD and the others? I guess the time line could work but other than speculation, I haven't read anything from Lin about it.

In the commentary of Tokyo Drift on DVD Justin Lin says the following: ”There’s Sung with his oral fixation, um, when we did the indy movie, his character smoked, you know, pretty much every other shot, and here because this is a big studio movie, no cigerettes for the main character, and uhh heh, so we had to kinda heh, make sure he’s always snacking.”

Just saw it this evening and I really liked it. Definitely a solid action/heist flick.

Throwing out my crazy prediction for the next flick...

Spoiler:
Paul Walker dies.

His career will, once this franchise comes to a close.

Aint that the truth? But if I were him, I'd find ways to bleed this franchise dry. Even if it meant a supporting role in a Tego Calderón/Don Omar spin-off franchise.

So Fast Five took in about $32.5M this weekend and is near $140M through 2 weeks.
