I went to see 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (3D肉蒲團之極樂寶鑑) with some friends over the weekend. Billed as the world's first "3D IMAX adult film" it should instead be billed as "the world's most ridiculous film"... Jackass 3D was more logical and restrained.

It starts off on an even-keel, and then various, inexplicable scenes are thrown into the mix: animals eating severed penises, barnyard phallic surgery, demonic possession, ancient vaginal torture devices, medicinal floating orbs, etc. And in case you get bored, there's boobs every few minutes. And it's all wrapped in what seems like a 13-year old's idea of sexuality (and Cinemax-style softcore).

This is an erotic film along the lines of Caligula, that is: Sex & Zen is not in any way erotic. The main differences between the two are that Sex & Zen doesn't pretend to be art, and it's not a total bore to sit through.

For those who like sex and violence with their camp: recommended.

I'd post the trailer but....yeah. it's pretty much SFW but you never know...and is this a proper porn film or just an "erotic costume drama" as Wikipedia puts it?

Watch the trailer cuz that's some weird HK shit there. It's like something from Zhang Yimou wu shu w/ erotic moments...weird.

It's not anything close to internet porn and if it wasn't for the violence, it would barely raise any pulses. I've seen more explicit scenes in any number of movies discussed here. I still wouldn't show it to kids.

The film made $358k (on 78 screens) in Hong Kong on its opening day. This makes it the highest opening day gross in Hong Kong, beating the record set by Avatar ($339k).

I hope this means we will start seeing more 3D cock and balls in America.
