Good movies... and you do really like them!

Okay, so I think there's too much negativity on this forum lately. What are some of your favorite movies that also happen to be critically acclaimed? In fact, name the ones that aren't so critically acclaimed... let's just keep this positive, please.

I'll start with The Wizard of Oz. I grew up watching the film on VHS. I remember a time period where I was watching it just about Saturday morning. Back then, I had no idea if this was a popular film, if critics liked it, or even that it was over 50 years old when I was watching it.

Now I'm grown and have gone through the art film ringer watching just about everything celebrated that I can get my hands on, and the wonderful thing is that The Wizard of Oz still holds up.

The House of Sand and Fog - The title is weird and the plot sounds as exciting as watching grass grow, but I was quickly sucked into this drama where both sides are both right and wrong, and a look at culture clashes. The performances are just so genuine and real, along with gorgeous music and cinematography.

Stand By Me - This movie is just timeless. STill looks beautiful, and brings back great memories of my own childhood when my buddies and I would go off on adventures in the woods or on our bikes.

I love IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, CASABLANCA, CITIZEN KANE, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, and SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, to name a few.

I watched WONDERFUL LIFE again (first time in many years) in December for the Holiday Challenge over on DVD Talk and it struck me how Buddhist the film's underlying theme was: "Life is sorrow..." I find it unusually emotionally honest for a Hollywood film.

I could go on and on, so I'll throw out the first few that come to mind that haven't been mentioned already.

'Strange Cargo'
'Memories of Murder'
'Goodbye Solo'
'Only Angels Have Wings'
'Ame Agaru' (After the Rain)
'Le Cercle Rouge'
'The Samurai Trilogy'
'Shane'

I love these films, absolutely love them. Seen most of then many times, some of them multiple times, and will watch them all again.

Re: Good movies... and you do really like them!

I happen to love a lot of movies that are critically acclaimed.
The ones that are mentioned so often that it's become a cliche are The Godfather I & II.
They should be critically acclaimed. They're great cinema, period.
