Re: Jigsaw (Saw 8) -- D: The Spierig Brothers -- 10/27/2017

Saw it tonight. It was alright I suppose, but unnecessary. I guessed part of the twist pretty early on as it was rather obvious. I wasn't sure where some of it was going, though. Laura Vandervoort was pretty good in this. And the red head chick was sexy.

I do like the franchise a lot. I thought they always tried to at least be creative with the plot and twists regardless of how convoluted it got.

They can continue the franchise from here, but I said earlier in the thread, it doesn't seem like there is a lot of buzz around this or people clamoring for them. We'll see how the BO does.

Just got out of it. Pretty bad. Very much in line with saw 4-7 on the non horror/"Mystery"/boring cop procedural bullshit and the traps were the least inventive yet.

Re: Jigsaw (Saw 8) -- D: The Spierig Brothers -- 10/27/2017

Just got out of this. Overall it wasn't very good and I would probably give it a 2.5/5. The traps are very uninteresting in this one, and the movie almost feels more like a serial killer procedural like some of the weaker movies.

The twist was both surprising and not that great but interesting at the same time. It also seems to want to try and be a soft reboot/ sequel, with the problem being that it invalidates the events from the previous movies(while still letting them exist somewhat) and also makes you confused about why it took so long for them to happen. It also made me feel somewhat cheated after the twist happened.

The ending also doesn't feel satisfying and I wondered if there was a post credit scene but I didn't stay all the way through. Honestly the best part of this movie is probably seeing Tobin Bell again.

Overall I would say this is a middling entry in the Saw series that reminds me of movies like Jason Goes to Hell and Curse of Michael Myers. After taking almost a decade off, this movie had to hit a bulls eye and it comes far short of doing that. 2.5/5

My rankings overall:

Saw: 4.5/5
Saw 2: 4/5
Saw 3: 3.5/5
Saw 4: 3/5
Saw 5:2/5
Saw 6: 4/5
Saw 7: 3/5
Jigsaw 8: 2.5/5

Re: Jigsaw (Saw 8) -- D: The Spierig Brothers -- 10/27/2017

I just got back from a matinee. I liked it. I think this ranks about the same for me as Saw V, which was a cop movie mixed in with a serial killer plot.

I thought the cop leads in this, Callum Keith Rennie and Cle Bennett, were way better than that God awful actor they had as the cop lead for Saw: The Final Chapter. Rennie is a pretty known Canadian actor and I know Bennett from Flashpoint on CBS.

The traps weren't as unique as they were in past movies, but I always find these movies fun. Vandervoort was good playing her part.

I do give them credit that they found yet another way to bring back Tobin Bell into the series.

The big twist:

Spoiler:
With the movie being told from 2 time periods kind of threw me off guard. I found that kind of cool even though it did make things a little convoluted. That was the only way that really made sense to keep John Kramer in this. Although Bell has aged considerably since Saw III, which was when the character was last alive.

I'd give this a B-

With the way they made this movie tie together, they could essentially

Spoiler:
shoehorn in a replacement for Jigsaw for ten more movies. However, the thought of so many people suddenly taking sides with someone that put their lives in danger is more than just a bit absurd. Plus, how the hell do these people not know about each other?

Just saw it and enjoyed it.

Spoiler:
The 2 timeline twist was great, which can easily be done again for future movies. I like the early stuff they did before, with Amanda becoming an assistant, so to me the Logan stuff was cool. He was much better than Hoffman. Too bad no Cary Elwes.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=saw2017.htm

It made roughly $16.25M this weekend.

2nd lowest opening weekend gross. Saw VI still has the lowest opening weekend ever.

For a series that's been dead for 7 years, it's not God awful. I think this could probably pull in $35-40M domestic. At least they managed to keep the budget really low.

Just watched it and... it was fine, a bit repetitive but certainly better than some of those sequels. IDK, not sure if we need any more of these but they certainly did okay rebooting and allowing them to continue. 2.5/5

Time to turn these future sequels into high-octane action films.

Saw this also and it was ok. I didn't hate it. I thought the gore was adequate and all.

Next one should star Dwayne Johnson.

Does any of this one tie into previous sequels? Do I need to refresh?

It takes place 10 years after Saw III.

Plot is mostly standalone as long as you're familiar with Jigsaw & what he does.

It’s still canon, but they don’t make any direct references to them If I recall correctly.

Most important thing to know is Jigsaw died in Saw III and the killings are apparently happening again. I can’t give away anything else because as in most Saw movies there is a plot twist.

Re: Jigsaw (Saw 8) -- D: The Spierig Brothers -- 10/27/2017

Watched this tonight. It's been so long since I've watched the Saw films, I'm glad it didn't require watching them first. That would have been more dedication than I'm willing to give to this series. Overall not a bad way to spend 90 minutes. It was kinda fun to see Bell in the role again. I was also surprised there was no unrated version. I think that's a first for the series.

Oh, and the final death scene was some of the worst CGI I've seen in recent memory. Like Sharknado level bad.
