Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29.99
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...d-april-173530
Narrowing the theatrical window, four Hollywood studios and DirecTV will launch a pricey premium VOD service at the end of April, followed swiftly by Comcast and VUDU. Consumers will be able to see a movie 60 days after its release in theaters. Theater Owners Fuming Over Studios' VOD PlanThe move is sure to irk exhibitors, and comes just as studios and theater owners are in Las Vegas for CinemaCon. Warner Bros., Fox, Sony and Universal are all on board, according to insiders. The movies will be available for 48 hours for $29.99. The first titles to be offered are likely Sony's Just Go With It, Fox's Cedar Rapids and Warner Bros.' Unknown. Fox Searchlight titles will be offered 60 days from the date that they go wide. While DirecTV will offer the service to its to customers nationwide, Comcast and VUDU will do so only in select markets, at least initially. Studios are hoping that premium VOD can help offset the decline of the DVD business, once a major source of revenue. But some in the industry question whether consumers will want to pay up to $29.99 for a movie. There’s also concern over piracy. Paramount isn’t taking part in the premium VOD service because of this issue. If you have already waited 60 days to watch the movie, you might as well wait 60-90 more and either buy the DVD or BD for under $20 and keep it or rent it. This has fail written all over it, plus I agree with Paramount about the Piracy issue. Spending $29.99 for a movie you can't even keep. :thmbsdwn: |

Agreed, $30 is insane. For $10, maybe.

Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
This might....might work if it was day & date with theatrical release. But at 60 days most movies have already passsed the point of being a must-see-immediately event. If you wanted to see it that bad, you saw it in theaters. If not, you can wait for a regular DVD/BD release. I don't know who the market for this is.
I just hope this doesn't have studios pushing back normal release dates to try & manipulate the 'value' of this service. |
Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
Yeah, i'm not paying more for a movie that's not day and date with the theatrical release. I'd consider $30 if it was, since it costs about $20+ for my wife and I go to a movie anyway.
FWIW, I think the big-wigs at Regal Cinemas and AMC both said they would stop carrying movies from studios that decided to do this. Let's see if actually follow through with it. |
Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
When this first got announced about a month or so ago, the big thing was the uproar from movie theaters:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ente...e-outrage.html They want to appeal to the family with small kids who aren't able to make it to the theater, but I agree that those people can just wait another month and own it. They also discussed options like getting a DVD copy once the DVD came out for an extra fee. |

And they still complain about piracy...

Fail. Wow, as Hollywood gimmicks go we go from 3D to this? Fuck that. LONG LIVE OUR 3D OVERLORDS!

Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
I can go to a before showing at AMC for $6. Add in a soda from 7-11 and it's $8 at worst for me to see a first run movie. Why am I going to pay $30 to see anything? I guess families would be stupid enough to do it but I'm not sure who this is aimed at.

Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
In theory, this isn't much different from offering films in hotel rooms between theatres and DVD, although I suspect people are more apt to drop premium money while "stranded" in a hotel room vs. their own home, where they have all their other entertainment options readily available.

Now imagine someone setting up a video camera, being able to take the time to get the angle just right, perfect the lighting, etc., with no fear of being caught by theater management. Audio could be captured from the output of the DirecTV box, and the quality would blow away a recording from a microphone in a crowded theater. |

Good luck with that Directv.

Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
Also, what is the window where a movie goes to a "budget" 2 dollar fare at some theaters? I'd think it's significantly less than 60 days.

It's a legitimate concern, IMHO. I've seen some images on AVS where people have taken photographs of their TVs/projection screens that are so good, it's not easy to tell it wasn't lifted directly from the source.

Seriously...do they not ASK anyone...you know, customer polls, websurveys, something?
$30 for release day? I'd consider it. By the time my wife and 3 kids got to a movie, it's around that (minus refreshments). So I'd consider it, once in awhile. But that's release day. Two months? How short is the window for DVD releases nowadays anyway? |

this will only be used by fatties fused to their couches.

Yet another dumb move from the studios. |
Re: Directv to release FOX, Warner and Sony movies 60 days after theatres VOD for $29
Why do people feel the NEED to get food from the concession stand for a movie. I always see this as a reason going to a theater is too much $$$. Can't people go 2 hours without stuffing their mouth? No wonder America is a land of fat-asses.
