and for the hell of it, this should also be the thread for the Indie Spirit Awards which are tomorrow at 10 on IFC. Usually that one is the most fun, since everyone is encouraged to swear and this year Joel McHale is hosting

I'd be willing to bet money that Franco wasn't a bit more serious than Gervais. He's much sharper than that.

Then he should have been sharp enough to know how his comments would look in print.

The only way this show will be interesting is if Franco surprises Hathaway by taking her from behind live during the monologue (or, err, duologue?).

Also I'm curious what Banksy is going to do. Will he show up? He's been given awards before and stayed away. Will he send a proxy? Something totally unexpected?

That'll be the most anticipated element of the show -- hopefully enough voters would be curious enough about what'd happen if Banksy won to vote for Exit for Documentary -- and we can have ourselves a show.

That it deserves it as the best documentary of the year is another thing.

Not sure if this means anything but on the local news this morning apparently he did a wall of a taco shop in the northern part of the county. So he's in the area. Or was in the area. Who knows

He's been reported to have done stuff here in LA as well. I think it's safe to say he's in CA at the moment.

The Academy won't allow someone in disguise to take the stage.
A designated proxy is only allowed to accept in the event that the winner is deceased.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards — 2011 Awards Show Discussion.

Is there really any chance of an upset in any of the actor awards?

Seems like Firth, Portman, Leo, and Bale pretty much have it wrapped up.

I suppose I'd like to believe Amy Adams could sneak in, but it does seem pretty much set in stone with the actors who are heavily favored to win to take home their Oscar.

It usually does "seem" pretty much set in stone by this point, based simply on the law of averages and the seventy bazillion awards that have already been handed out by the time the Oscars roll around. The main reason we all keep watching is that on very rare occasions, Oscar voters decide to buck the trend and present us with the sight of one surprised celebrity and one pissed off celebrity, live on TV.

I don't think Melissa Leo will win. a) Amy Adams deserves it far more, as does Hailee Steinfeld, and b) she had a meltdown with the self campaign. Helena Bonham Carter is quickly rising in favour.
