Insidious (2011)

New film from James Wan (Death Sentence, Saw):

I'm not a Wan fan, but Rose Byrne's presence guarantees I'll be seeing this one at the theater. Trailer makes it look like your standard haunting film, though I've heard good things from the festival circuit.

This will be fantastic. I've seen one clip, but will avoid trailers and anything else released until I've seen the movie.

Looks decent.

I've heard some good things as well about it. Didn't realize both James Wan and Leigh Whannell were behind this.

I understand the Saw connection/advertising, but where does Paranormal Activity fit in? Same production company?

Oren Peli is one of the executive producers.

Saw it last week and thought it was a blast - finally a good pg-13 horror movie with great atmosphere, some good scares and a few decent laughs.

Ah! I didn't know that. Thanks!

I consider Wan's original Saw the only good movie in that franchise and managed to avoid Death Sentence and Dead Silence. I'll probably catch this when it hits Blu.

I had zero interest in seeing this, but then one of my friends said it was like sitting in Disney's The Haunted Mansion (ride, not movie) for 90 minutes. Now I'm intrigued.

So, a lot of jump scares then?

It's almost entirely jump scares, but I think Wan pulls off that nonsense with some creativity. Fun movie. It's "Poltergeist" meets "Paranormal Activity."

Re: Insidious (2011)

It is mostly jump scares but there are no FALSE scares - where it's just a cat, or a friend around a corner - all of the jump scares are actually creepy things, which made it a total blast IMO. Also, the added humour of the Leigh Whannel character was great and they had a great device to add tension to a scene with a flashbulb that I thought was REALLY effective.

Looks good. Love movies like this.....if they are done well.

It's at 59% right now on Rotten Tomatoes, which for a horror movie isn't too bad. I'll probably try and catch this some time over the weekend.

Ebert gave it 2 1/2 stars.

I agree. The movie was such. They were real scares, not fake ones.
I liked it a lot. The atmosphere and camera work and lack of music in some scenes and it was very tense and effective.
Not sure about ending though. I am still thinking about it.

I thought it was OK (**1/2) It is just not really scary, it's only kinda scary

No movie is.

Re: Insidious (2011)

I caught it last night, and surprise, surprise, I loved it. Of Wan's prior films, I didn't care for Saw, had zero desire to see Dead Silence and thought Death Sentence was decent, but a disappointment overall. If not for Rose Byrne and the festival hype, I likely would have waited to see this on Blu-ray.

I was very impressed with the level of atmosphere and tension on display. The film is genuinely unsettling. I also thought the idea behind what the haunting actually is was most intriguing, a creative detour from the norm. Everything with Lin Shaye and her crew is gold. They come in midway through and pretty much steal the movie.

One major plot point is predictable and I didn't much care for a bizarre scene with
Spoiler:
the demon in his little workshop,
but Insidious worked for me as a whole. It's a step in the right direction for Wan, and I'm glad I made a trip to the theater for it.

It's too bad some of you guys skipped Dead Silence. Sure, it's not a masterpiece of horror cinema. But it was a pretty fun late night flick.

Perfect description. I loved it until the 'explanation' scene, where it got a little hokey, but remained fun until the end.

Agreed. Wan even mentioned that he made it as a throwback to the films of the 60's it took such an unnecessary bashing when it came out - I thought it was a great little fright flick.

As for insidious, I'm getting the same vibe.

It wasn't the scariest movie in the world, but it sure was a whole hell of a lot of fun to watch. I really enjoyed it a whole hell of a lot, and can see watching it in the October horror movie challenge for years to come.

I know I wasn't the only one who had flashbacks of New Nightmare at the end scene involving the Demon and the kid...unless i'm the only one who remembers New Nightmare :D

Overall, decent movie. Had a few good scares, predictable but effective. I probably would have enjoyed it more had I didn't watch it in a theater full of stupid teens running their mouth.
