It's not as hands-on as the kinds of documentaries here, but I thought the first "An Evening With Kevin Smith" was pretty indispensable.

How about those Documentaries on the WB Kubrick set? Also...Curious Case of Ben Button has a good doc too.

Re: Favorite Documentaries about Movie's and Move Making?

1. "Movies" is the plural, "Movie's" is a possessive
2. It is "movie-making"
3. Full Tilt Boogie, the making of From Dusk Till Dawn.

-- Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate --

A very good cautionary tale. You can watch it in eight parts on youtube, with part one here:

That one documentary, about the proper use of apostrophe marks? Better than "The Sorrow and the Pity"!

Warner is doing a '1939' documentary this year, but I haven't seen it.

Re: Favorite Documentaries about Movie's and Move Making?

the only two i could sit through and loved in its entirety were the ones from
"Platoon".
&
"Iron Man"

i'm not sure if you classify them as docus, but they were feature length and highly engrossing and interesting.

The recently released Cinematographer Style looks good as well. Here's a review of it.

Scorsese's documentaries on Italian and American films are excellent. Apparently he's going to be making one on British films as well. Also worth watching are Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession, A Decade Under the Influence and A Constant Forge, a lengthy Cassavetes doc included in his Criterion box set.

I would second Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession. Technically it may fall under TV, but much of it's about movies.

For move making, there's Mad Hot Ballroom.

Any good documentaries on the origin of film and television?

Hey there....I was wondering if there are any good documentaries on dvd about the origins of film and television? About who invented them and their progression throughout the early 1900's?

Modern Marvels did a show on television which isn't too bad. NetFlix has it on disc and streaming.

Thomas Edison invents the motion picture camera

people go to california and steal his ideas and sell them without paying patent royalties. Hollywood hasn't changed much in over 100 years
