Yeah, huge difference in pedigree - JAWS is my favourite movie of all time. Judging by the trailers, they are not trying to make a movie as complex.

You guys are misinterpreting my point. Jaws is my favorite movie of all time too.
I'm just saying that a shark movie doesn't have to be rated R to be good. Movies period don't need to be R in order to be good. This movie looks like shit whether it's rated G, PG, PG-13, or R. It would be fun if it was a porno though.
Just strictly hypothetically it would be like seeing a trailer for Jaws for the first time and saying "meh, it's only PG or PG-13...it's gonna suck, but if it was rated R THEN I'd be interested."
But on the other hand, if you insist on making a shitty shark movie you might as well throw as much nudity and gore in as humanly possible. I see what you're saying. And if the movie really is PG-13 then we're not going to get much of that.

I was excited, until I saw it had a PG-13.
I'm sorry, this is a film that screams tits, ass, and gore all in glorious 3D.
PG-13 will only guarantee us sideboob, maybe one ass, and offscreen violence.
I'll wait and save my money for Pirahna 3DD instead.

Sadly, you speak the truth.
I still want to see this, though. I'm unable to resist a film about people being eaten by sharks.

Same here. I even watched that Sharks in Venice debacle.

Can this thread get an updated title since it actually has a name now "Shark Night: 3D"
I'm also a little disappointed the movie is PG-13. I'm not an "It has to be R-rated" nazi for it to be good, but just seeing the trailers with hot girls, stupid guys, screams and lots of sharks screams nudity and lotd of bloody violence.
I don't know, I'm 50/50 on seeing this.

Pretty much all my excitement to see this theatrically has been drained and a lot of that has to do with the PG-13 and the trailer.
I was hoping for a balls out Piranha 3D type gorefest. Over the top, self aware, not too serious, with a Dead Alive-esque beach set piece. Almost like Jaws for Saw's fans. The PG-13 rating kills this. Sure, most of the creature features I love aren't R rated extravaganza's (Grizzly, Orca, Anaconda, Food of the Gods, Killer Fish, etc) but as noted that was a different time and quite frankly, a lot of the love for those flicks are rooted in my nostalgia.
Jaws, also my favorite film, I think would be a lot closer to an R rating today then some of you guys are assuming. There is some moderate nudity and language, the deaths are pretty intense/bloody and children are mauled. In the 90s and early 00s, for sure it would have gotten an R. In the last couple years if it were to be re-rated it'd possibly be a PG-13, but I wouldn't be surprised for it to get an R.
The other thing that really has me worried is the sharks won't feature into the story as much as when the assumed torture porn/hillbilly murderer/whatever plot is introduced. This works sometimes, like in Anaconda where you have Voight's over the top performance to pull you through and some real fun in the script, but in something like Lake Placid the killer croc story feels like a clever backdrop for a less than clever or inspiring comedy. Despite a good cast, nothing really worked for me in LP. I wanted a killer croc. Here, I want killer sharks. That's all. Really.

I'm interested in this but it's difficult to avoid being spoiled. It seems like every day, every website I go to has an article titled "New Shark Night 3D images" or "Check out this new Shark Night 3D clip".

At least they kept the tradition of killing off the black man, he looks like he's the first to go.

I went to catch an early showing of this tonight after work with my son. He's nuts for sharks, with Jaws as one of his all-time favorites. I wasn't really expecting much from this, so I wasn't disappointed. It was fun. The whole movie plays like a sanitized version of the Piranha remake. Waaaaaay far-fetched, but I think that goes without saying. I actually enjoyed the 3-D, which came as a big surprise to me. Most of my 3-D experiences have been pretty lacking. It worked well here, IMO. As for my son? He freaking loved it. I expected that, lol.

Thanks for the words, Ed. That's enough to sell me on it. I just want a fun time watching people being eaten by sharks.

Saw this last night, and I was pretty disappointed. The movie really, really needed to be an R rating. There were numerous scenes that were just begging for 3D T&A. I loved Piranha and hated this, FWIW.

"I hated the original title [Shark Night 3D], too," Ellis told the mag, "so at our weekly production meetings, I made everyone on the crew come up with names — Chums, Fins, Terror on the Lake — but they all seemed kind of cheesy. And so until I hear a better name, I like what we've got right now: Untitled 3D Shark Thriller. The title says everything you need to know: 'We’ve got sharks.' 'It’s in 3D.' and, 'It’s a thriller.'"
It's comical enough to almost make it all worth it.

Re: Untitled Shark Thriller 3D (Ellis, 2011)
Pretty much hated it - there were a few 'so bad it's good' moments and I did like the explanation for what is going on but outside of Donal Logue and a few OK shark moments, I was mostly bored. It felt like the balls had been cut off a really fun and cool b-movie... also, for being called SHARK NIGHT, there was surprisingly little shark action - what little we do get is movie of the week material. The after credit sequence looks like the cast had a lot more fun making this movie than we did watching it. Ellis is really hit or miss, and this one missed IMO - I'm also a 3D nut but thought this 3D pretty much sucked.

I enjoyed this movie, but not as much as Piranha 3D. Looking forward to the sequel later this year. Going into the theater I just assumed it was rated R, so I as I was watching, I was surprised at the lack of gore or nudity, but it was a fun movie.

this movie is fucking horrible. do not waste your time or money on this film. i sit through a lot of shit but this was a chore and a half. the only reason to check this out is if sara paxton gives you a boner since she's in a bikini 90% of the time. otherwise stay far away.
