Affleck is a great director but I fear any adaptation of The Stand is doomed to failure.

I just can't get over it. Ben Affleck was in Chasing Amy. Ben Affleck directed Gone Baby Gone. Ben Affleck is boys with Matt Damon. Ben Affleck gave Eric Cartman a hand-job.
This same Ben Affeck, whom I respect and admire, is going to undertake a novel that I would beat Ben Affleck to death with if I had to make a choice between the two!
I'm floored. I'm elated. I'm...I'm...confused, bewildered, dumb-founded. Plus, he's writing a script, creating a world somewhat separate from Stephen King's world, due to Affleck's differing aspect to how these people will now live. His perspective will be "for the big-screen," while King's perspective was massive, epic, spiraling, emotional, and seemingly non-ending.
When all's said and done, and I come down from this emotional diatribe, I think Affleck will make us a damn good movie about Stu Redman and his friends.

yeah jokes aside...he's done solid direction w/ 2 so far (the first being better storywise). And he's currently doing one film right now. Sooooo maybe he's good enough to go big. Good for him if so.

Given Affleck's latest projects, I've really grown to respect his work. This is great news!

As a favor, since Kevin Smith helped out Ben Affleck in the past, Ben is returning the favor and is going to cast Kevin Smith as the evil and nasty Randall Flagg

I would think it a good idea for this film to be done in three parts, this way it isn't rushed. There's too much good material for everything to fit in one single movie.
1 Part I: "Captain Trips"
2 Part II: "On the Border"
3 Part III: "The Stand"

Considering they will probably be called "The Stand: ______", I'd lol if the 3rd movie was called "The Stand: The Stand".

Even competently made, I cannot believe that this property would make enough coin for a multi-movie deal. There are passionate fans, sure, but I don't think that they could drive enough sales, especially since a serialized movie would alienate anyone missing the first one (and they could not just pick up the next book).

I'm in the process of reading all the dark tower books, they should make that into a mini series. More action and even the slow parts cOuld be hurried through and explained better

It's in production. It was going to be a movie and series followed by another movie, or something. Universal balked at how big the project was though, so it's at a stand still right now, IIRC.

If the fanboys of that genre could wait three years between films, I think that the same can be done with The Stand. I know the generation of "instant gratification" was either us in the 1990s or 2000s - I forget - but that generation (us) is older now, slower, mellowed, and infinitely more patient that people give us credit for!
They rushed the Matrix sequels, and Kill Bill, too. I don't think there's anything wrong with waiting. I think that helps to build up the craziness! After all, we practically had to wait 2 years between Sopranos seasons!
With that kind of timeline, I think Affleck could stretch and build his capital, and with more capital, better films come out of it. No room for cheese in "The Stand." There was cheese-galore in the TV version, as much as I liked it.
