Re: Best "sweeping/epic" score

I've always loved John Barry's score to King Kong '76. One of the best things about that film. It's a big score for a big monkey.

i thought Batman Begins had a great, sweeping and memorable score. The Dark Knight wasn't too shabby either. Howard and Zimmer, i believe.

I always thought The Dark Crystal had a great score. Didn't care for the movie, but love the score.

An excellent score. Alas, the best recording of it out there is mono and not of especially high quality.

Not true. One of the CD releases was in stereo.

So while it may be a favorite score for some, it's not really the kind of music (we must assume) the OP is asking for.
Something can be sweeping ("of wide range or scope") without being orchestral. If anything, Reznor's score has a far more diverse array of sounds than some of the scores mentioned in this thread.

And it's certainly epic.

Give it a listen before writing it off.

The score to Restoration by James Newton Howard is fantastic:

I love the score from Gladiator. And of course, the score and theme from Superman has always been a favourite.

Another great one is Edward Shearmur's score for The Count Of Monte Cristo:

I agree. Both had great scores. The Joker's theme is jarring (in a good way, though).

Well that's a shame. I was looking forward to getting that one.

What exactly is wrong with it?

I guess I am being too harsh. It just sounds like it was recorded in the early 1980s. It really needs a remastering or a new recording altogether. The score has so much percussion and heavy use of deep brass that a new high-fidelity recording of it would be a terrific thing to have.

I am talking about the Varèse Sarabande CD, btw.

I actually don't mind the movie.

also thought the music for the Tara sequence of 'Heavy Metal' is glorious.

Too bad you don't get to hear the chorus in the sample video they provide:

So the music was better than the Theatrical Cut, Director's Cut, and The Final Cut?
