I saw some of Avatar in 3-D at Best Buy, and I wasn't impressed. The theatrical experience had a great feeling of depth, but the picture on the TV looked much more flat.
Yesterday I saw an underwater video of fish in 3-D, on the same TV at the same Best Buy, and it looked like Avatar did in theaters. Truly impressive. Don't know what the difference was, but now I appreciate what 3-D in the home could be like.

Blah, Blah shoot it in real 3D, blah blah ... saw Avatar and the 3D wasn't that great.
Now don't get me wrong I'm all for a better depth of field and I think 3D or (4D?) has great potential to explore those areas but I'll never buy into it if I have to pay extra money and wear glasses.

3-D is and has always been a gimmick for people who fall prey to gimmicks. It's for people who like shiny things, plain and simple. It does nothing for me in any way. I hope it's relegated back to the 'rare use category'. It's moronic and if anything hurts the art of cinema, and dumbs down film goers.

In my city (over 1 million people... to give you an idea of the size)
Piranha was ONLY shown in 3D
Saw 7 was ONLY shown in 3D
Green Hornet is ONLY showing in 3D (there's one 2D showing in the nearest small town, though)
and now
Sanctum is ONLY shown in 3D
Fucking bullshit.

There was a time when the Academy ratio (1.37:1) was the standard in theaters. Then we got the scope aspect ratio, and suddenly filmmakers were able to paint across a wider canvas.
There was a time when mono audio was the standard. Then we got stereo, and different sounds could come from different channels, thus enhancing the movie for audiences.
How we experience movies has evolved over the years. Yes, 3-D is still in its infancy. Especially when people are still throwing things at the camera. If you treat it as nothing more than a gimmick, that's all it will be. Get serious about it, use it as a tool to convey something that 2-D cannot, and I think it has potential.

I generally avoid all 3D movies by seeking out 2D screenings. There aren't many (I only found one for Green Hornet, not that it mattered since I walked out of it anyway), but I refuse to pay for the premium unless it's a movie I really care about seeing that way. Since Avatar, the only 3D movie I've seen that was worth the money was TRON Legacy, and I don't necessarily think it benefitted much. 2D in IMAX would have been just as sufficient to me.

While I don't necessarily feel the same way, I can totally understand the argument that Inception is complete and utter pretension (it's pretending to be about something "meaningful", while it's not) as Piranha is exactly what it sets out to be.

Exactly. Inception was as vacuous as Piranha, but pretended to be so much more. Piranha was silly, stupid, and tons of fun, and it knew it. I'm not saying it's the best film of the year (or even among the 10 best), but I would gladly put that on and laugh at the carnage and ogle the nudity when I'm looking for something to keep me entertained. I have no interest in seeing Inception again.
