I wonder how casting directors cast the young actors. Do they try to find a child who looks like their adult counterpart or do they take a photo of the adult actor as a child and try to match that up to the child actor they cast?

probably more of the latter but the former also exists. Trying to find a kid looking a lot like the actor as a kid is a longer process I'd assume.

Yea Id say they look for a kid who looks like the adult now. In most cases the adult still looks the same as when they were a kid anyway. But for the sake of the audience we are more familiar with the actor in their current adult state so it makes more sense to find the match that way. Now if the adult actor was known as a child maybe they'd go for that.
