^ Brooks' best films are his earlier ones...Real Life, Modern Romance, and Lost in America.

Caught The Right Stuff on HDnet a couple of weeks ago. Pretty good flick.

I caught Permanent Record, an 80's teen suicide movie, yesterday and aside from the melodrama, it was good. Probably the best technical 80's teen flick as there were some great shots and camera movement. Has a young Keanu Reeves who has a pretty good scene with his friend's parents.

Two others I caught up with this year: Soylent Green and Love Actually (both for challenges)

I would love to see this story continue but the window is now closed unless you recast the kids

It was also strange to watch the commentary. The director was pretty self-assured that they were about to start on a sequel. It was one of those moments where my eyes widened, my neck muscles tightened, I grit my teeth and inhale through my mouth.

I forget the history of the movie/franchise but it seems like it was pretty much a given at the time (obviously, considering the ending). I don't know when the commentary was recorded but it could have been earlier in the release cycle than later.

/\ Many audio commentaries are recorded shortly before the film is released, often a week or two before. The Golden Compass was likely one of them.

Yea, that's what it was. But, hey, it was Chris Weitz. The movie made money, just not enough to warrant a sequel. And Chris went on and directed one of the Twilight flicks. He's not exactly in trouble for The Golden Compass.

Still a good movie. I might read the books sometime, just because I want to know where it goes. And I'll have the imagery from the movie to help me along.

It would have been nice to have a lower-budget version a la Dawn Treader or a TV version. I did read book 1 so I'll probably read the others at some point, though I've heard that the religious angle gets more overt, which can get tricky for a mainstream film.

I'd settle for them releasing the entire first book/movie. The ending of the book is pretty much lopped off (it was filmed, but they decided to stick it at the beginning of movie two the Subtle Knife). I felt the ending as released is pretty jarring in a "is that it" sort of way.

As for the topic of this thread, I watched Miracle on 34th Street (1947) for the first time prior to Christmas. I've owned it for several years, but I'd never sat down to watch it.

After seeing every other Kevin Smith movie over the years, I finally saw Mallrats just last week. I can now say I finally understand the chocolate pretzel joke.

12 Monkeys--avoided this one for this longest time for some reason. Got it for cheap over the holidays and watched it the other day. I think I enjoyed this one more than Brazil. Gets a thumbs up from me.

The Graduate; a lot funnier then I thought it was going to be.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; I didn't get the hype.
