Is Harry Potter gonna make $300 million this year? I thought those movies always did at least half a billion per film?

The thing's made $830 million worldwide so far. It's kinda doing just fine... ESPECIALLY for the 7th movie in a series!

Awesome for the Coen brothers.

I suspect the next Narnia movie will be straight to DVD though.

No. I think Walden Media will try to find another way to lower the budget.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Budget: $180 million
Worldwide Theatrical Gross: $745 million

Prince Caspian
Budget: $225 million
Worldwide Theatrical Gross: $420 million

Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Budget: $140 million
Worldwide Theatrical Gross: $193 million

I guess it's still profitable (barely), but Walden will still try to nickel and dime their way to attempt to film the entire franchise. It'll be interesting to see if Fox jumps on board for a fourth outing or if Walden has to find a third (!) distributor of the franchise.

I honestly believe releasing Prince Caspian in the summer was a stupid idea on Disney and Walden's part, but what do I know?

A snowstorm on the east coast of the U.S.A. hit hard yesterday, preventing a lot of potential trips to the theater. 10-15 inches in NYC. Hell, they haven't even shoveled the sidewalk outside my building yet.

I was shocked to see a full house at 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday for True Grit. We had to go to the next showing to get decent seats - and that theater was full before showtime. The crowd did skew older, so maybe matinees are standard operating procedure for those folks... Either way, it was great to see such a big crowd for True Grit.

I wonder by VotDT isn't doing well...? I saw it with my kids and liked it better than Prince Caspian.

Yeah, Fox seemed to be doing the right things with copying the marketing of the first film (release date, conservative media outlets, Christian audiences, just calling it Narnia instead of VOTDT, etc) I guess there's simply not as much interest in the ongoing series after the first one.

It would be nice for fans to get to see the rest of the series made, so I am pulling for them to keep going. Tough call though if the film tops out at about 250m worldwide.

I'm surprised True Grit is making so much. Westerns usually aren't people's thing.

Marketing and the Coen Brothers definitely helped it. This thing was all over TV especially NFL, NBA games and the Coen Bros. winning an Oscar and marketing it as 'Directed by the Coen Bros.' or 'from the directors/makers of No Country' that definitely helped.

Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon certainly didn't hurt either.

So glad Gulliver got terrible numbers. Studios should have learned about huge budget comedies after Evan Almighty.

All of the Monday Actuals, excluding True Grit, were 1/2 to 1 million below the estimates. True Grit was actually higher than the estimate.

Universal overestimated Fockers by $3.2 million for the weekend as well.

Last Mon. wasn't a holiday coming off the big weekend, but this Monday was. I'd still say that's a good hold, though.

Estimates on the final total? I'm guessing somewhere around $163m.
