Hilary Swank!? This is the first list of nominations and critics awards where I've seen her name mentioned for "Conviction". Was that movie even released yet?

While there are other actors and actresses I'm rooting for more this time around, I'm VERY happy to see "Winter's Bone" was not forgotten. What a terrific film and both Hawkes and Lawrence were excellent.
Based on this (and the Globe noms) it kind of seems like the AA best supporting actress is going to be a close race between Leo and Adams. I think Firth is a lock and Bening and Portman seem to be the two most likely to win their first Oscar. |

Wow. Jeremy Renner in for The Town and no Andrew Garfield for Social Network. I have a feeling those will be reversed on Oscar night. Despite the Globes snubs, I think True Grit will be a player for the Oscars, as evidenced by the SAG noms it received. It appears to be under the radar, al la Million Dollar Baby, Munich, and Iwo Jima. I don't think it'll win anything on Oscar night, but it might rack up on nominations.
It also is becoming more clear that Eisenberg, Firth, and Franco have the first 3 spots locked. And then 4 and 5 will be filled by a combo of Bridges, Duvall, Wahlberg, and Gosling. If the Academy truly loves The Fighter, that could push Wahlberg into the top 5. Gosling is also a past nominee, so I could see him sneaking in as well. At least Best Actor has some excitement this year regarding who gets in, although Firth winning seems like a foregone conclusion. |
