Re: Movies that peaked with the 1st scene
The first one that came to my mind. Incredible first scene, frenetic, vibrant, and that awesome new order 'confusion' remix. Just one damn incredible scene. And then the rest of the movie started and blah. Especially the jelly monster fight at the end. SO bad. But I still bought the dvd for that one scene.

yeah....me too. It's a DAMN FINE scene to start with. It only leads to other great scenes... THOUGH...Waltz acting in that scene was his best cuz essentially...that's his scene to chew up the dialogue and make sweet sweet love to our eyes.

OK, it isn't literally the very first scene, but the very early masked ball sequence from Judex is so much better than anything else in the movie that I have to mention it.

From Rip This Joint to the final shootout, this was a great film. One of the best gunfight movies ever. Silverman playing herself was also great casting.

I'm not sure if I correctly remember the opening scene of Swordfish
Poseidon. Not the first scene, but the wave does flip the ship within the first 10 minutes or so.

Here are some before 1990, and/or outside of the U.S.?
Raising Arizona (not saying the rest of it was bad, just that it peaked at the beginning)
Bergman's Wild Strawberries
Miike's Dead or Alive

The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg had the best action sequence first, then relied on screwy comedy.
While some might argue, I think the opening of Hellboy is a good bit above the rest of the movie, even if the title character isn't {really} in it.

Here's the scene. Maurice Jarre's music helps immensely:
