New to Avatar - Theatrical version or new extended edition?
Thinking about finally giving Avatar a look. Haven't had much interest in it up to now, but it did come recommended by a friend whose tastes I trust.
Just curious as to whether I am better off entering into the film with the theatrical cut or the recently released extended edition. Thoughts??

Get rid of that friend.
But seriously, here is my opinion which I am sure many will disagree with. If it were just your typical, moderately successful film, I would say see whatever cut is more highly regarded by whichever sources of film opinion you trust. However, Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time, and by a pretty large margin. Because you are a film fan (presumably), I think you owe it to your fandom to see the theatrical cut (first) that led to the film's rather astounding financial accomplishments and judge it based on its merits in that form.

don't just get rid of him, kill em' HARD.
Here is what you do... get two TVs. Put in a dvd of Dances with Wolves on one tv, and on the other put in a dvd that features the Smurfs. Then, now this is the part you Really need to listen to, Go and get yourself a gun and blow your brains out. There you go, The TRUE Avatar experience! Add salt and pepper to taste.

It's an ok film, but I would watch the extended version. I saw the re-released theatrical version first and I had no problems with pacing issues or plot-points; the story was well-developed. The actual dialogue on the other hand, that can't be changed regardless of how many minutes you add.

Bring a bottle of Maker's and pound a shot every single time an innovative story development shocks and surprises you. Or as we call it around here, the "Designated Driver" program.

For whatever its worth, I think the recommendation was more on an eye candy level than a narrative one.
Regardless, I think I'd better stick with the theatrical version.
Thanks for the input. Dances with Wolves meets the Smurfs? God help me!

Yeah, I'd say start with the theatrical version. If you like it enough, you may want to revisit it via the extended edition down the line.
