Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (CATFISH directors Joost/Schulman) >> 10/21/2011

I wonder how many casual movie-goers will actually catch any lapse in continuity. I'm a pretty big fan of the first two PA flicks, and I'm pretty sure that any fuck up in the timeline or anything like that would go totally unnoticed by me.

But I tend to not pick things apart too much anyway. I think as soon as you start to over think things like this you reduce your ability to enjoy them.

Well, for a good laugh, I already missed what was mentioned by Chmiel in this thread about Micah

These flicks are just really entertaining to me.

Spoiler:
I do think it's pretty silly that the girls videotaped themselves. Hopefully that only happens once, then I can write it off as something Katie and Kristi forgot about. However, I don't find it that relevant that the police didn't check home videos from the 1980s to solve a murder case from the 2000s.

I feel the same way too. Most of my friends and relatives have disliked the "found footage" genre since Blair Witch came out. But I really like the PA movies and I hope the 3rd one is ok.

This might be the first one I see in theaters. I imagine the jump scenes will be much better with theater quality sound.

Fixed.

I loved the original, but I thought the sequel was a pale imitation with an even more annoying cast.

I'm still not sold on the prequel idea (why not title it Paranormal Activity 0?) especially with all the loose ends that were left after the last entry. Yes, I know they could make it a prequel-sequel like the last entry, but really? Blah.

Paramount is going to fuck up this franchise faster than Lionsgate and Saw.

Of course they are. This is the 3rd film in a series for a film they originally bought with the sole intention of shelving it and remaking it. They rushed 2 into production after the first one hit big, so they've been flying by the seat of their pants hoping for a quick cash grab.

So far, though, it's working.

Technically, DreamWorks purchased the original film with the intent to remake (and include the original film as a bonus feature once the DVD was released). It wasn't until Peli convinced the studio to test the original film before proceeding with a remake. Audience reception was high, but what caused the film to sit on a shelf for nearly two years was the increased tension between DreamWorks and Paramount due to their ending distribution deal. Adam Goodman picked the film up in a turn around when he jumped ship from DreamWorks to Paramount. When he started at Paramount is when the film got fast tracked to release by having Peli shoot new footage like the alternate endings plus remixing the soundtrack.

If Paramount knew how to treat a horror franchise, because they haven't as seen by this and a specific franchise involving a chainsaw mass murderer, they would've started planning the sequels while the films were still in their theatrical release (a la Saw).

Well, yea, I knew all that. Hell, I was at one of the first screenings before it went wide. I was only making the point that Paramount wound up with an unexpected huge hit on their hands, so instead of taking off a year between films and doing them right, they're done as rush jobs.

As was I.

However, I do agree that Paramount should be working on the sequels before the current sequel makes its way to theaters. Personally, I don't see this franchise being around much longer. There was a 24% drop in domestic box office gross between the first and second entries. If that continues with this outing, Paranormal Activity 3 will have a hard time crossing $65 - 70 million domestically. It'll still be a money maker for Paramount as they're done on the cheap and they own the film in most territories, but how long do you keep going when each film is losing a quarter of its past business?

And for those who haven't seen Paranormal Activity 2, it'll be on Netflix within the next few weeks before the theatrical release of this entry. My wife never saw it (as she was sick and I opted to go to the free screening with my friends without her, waa-waa), so we'll be watching it before seeing this one at midnight.

Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (CATFISH directors Joost/Schulman) >> 10/21/2011

Okay, I have to admit, I like what I saw.

I enjoyed Kristi throwing water on the demon and the demonologist getting his head smashed in at the kitchen table.

... and it's obvious this film will end with their house burning down (based upon Katie's back story in the first film). I wonder how they'll tie the loose ends with Paranormal Activity 2 or just completely ignore it and wait until 4?
