Morning Glory

Though the characterizations are a drawn a bit too broad at times, I enjoyed "Morning Glory", and Rachel McAdams gives a winning performance as an up-an-coming early morning show producer who has to deal with sagging ratings, and a pair of co-anchors (played by Diane Keaton and Harrison Ford) who don't quite get along. It follows a somewhat standard Rocky (underdog with the heart of gold) storyline, but I found it entertaining nonetheless, especially in the final act.

I give it 3 stars or a grade of B.

Harrison Ford was on Letterman and The Daily Show to promote this movie, and he kept referring to Rachel McAdams as "the girl" and "the girl in this movie". What's up with that?

Let's just say that Ford is a Prop 19 supporter, a very BIG Prop 19 supporter. So remembering names and such is not his strong suit.

Not a huge McAdams fan but I've been looking forward to this.

I saw a poster for this that has "What's the Story" above the words Morning Glory. Is this somehow connected to the Oasis album?

McAdams

Actually, this film is a re-imagining of "Bye, Bye, Birdie".

Harrison Ford is the product of a "Flowers for Algernon" like experiment, and he is rapidly reverting to his Frankenstein-minded preoperative state.

I dislike Rachel McAdams (butt aside), and won't be seeing any movie she's headlining anytime soon.

Naw. Neil Burger's The Lucky Ones only made $266k.

I mentioned before that Ford was doing the talk show rounds last week, and I see he will be on Conan this week. Keaton was on Leno.

Has anyone seen McAdams do any promotion for this movie? If she hasn't, isn't that very weird?

They should give her the parts Megan Fox rejects. Then I'd go see her.

She did the junket. Haven't seen her on any talk shows though.

Re: Morning Glory

I work for a talk show similar to the one depicted in Morning Glory, and we saw it as a group a few weeks ago.

It is damn near 100% accurate on how those shows are run, what the meetings are like, even the technology involved (they threw out the term "deko" a few times, which is only something you'd know if you spent time in the business).

The movie is pretty light and fun, but really rang true for me. For those that have seen it, I'm in the "senior producer" position, working for a younger EP with a ton of enthusiasm. There were moments that were straight out of my life. I appreciated the film for treating that with respect, and it was simply a lot of fun to watch.

Re: Morning Glory

My wife and I saw this tonight, a rare night at the theater for us. It was predictable, yes, but the cast was solid and charming enough to overcome those deficiencies. Things I appreciated:

Becky Fuller never goes through any soul-searching about whether her career is worth losing the man in her life. She clearly has her priorities in place, and while they're tested a bit they're never in danger. I appreciated that the movie seemed to intend itself for an audience of grown-ups who don't consider every dalliance worth abandoning their personal dreams.

No effort was made to force a romantic relationship for Harrison Ford's character with either Diane Keaton's or Rachel McAdams's. It was nice to not have that kind of dynamic in a movie for a change.

The cinematography was kinetic and kept the pace of the story flowing nicely, even through a lot of exposition.

In a lot of ways, it was a nice bookend to a movie-going year for us that began with Up in the Air. Morning Glory never reaches that level of nuance or thoughtfulness, but perhaps that's the appeal. Just like the argument is made that morning audiences want more entertainment than news, perhaps we movie goers need a little more "feel good" than "feels true."

One last thought: For most of the film, I thought they could have cast any number of guys instead of Harrison Ford. Then he came storming in, demanding, "I need eggs!" in a way that only Harrison Ford could have done. That's when I understood his casting in that role. It's no "Get off my plane!" but it's one of the finer Ford quote moments in recent years.
