This movie was just epically uninteresting. I wasn't bored watching it, but at the same time I didn't care about what was going on, it was like being a kid and having keys dangled in front of my face ... actually I think the keys as a kid were way more enjoyable than this was as an adult.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles (2011, Dir-Liebesman, Eckhart)

Well, all the complaints about this film are warranted. Some terrible, groan inducing dialogue and acting by the no-name supporting cast. The plot was as cliche and predictable as it gets and the neutered action was disappointing. That and the casting of Michelle Rodriguez as the token "tough chick". I am so sick of her being cast in these roles.

This also felt like it was a propaganda film financed by the Marine Corp.

I will give props to Eckhart, he's a good actor and sold himself as an action star if you will.

All that being said I suppose there are worse ways to spend 2 hours.

I agree, but Seagal and Van Damme were more 90's than 80's.

I enjoyed it. I liked the characters and the invasion seemed like what a real invasion might look like. I really don't understand the hate.

+1

I also like that the film spared little time for sermons and speeches. Even Aaron Eckhart's speech at the end was both brief and earned.

The hate comes fromt he corny, cliched dialog and the ID4 ending. I loved the combat , but would have rather preferred a bleak ending that flows right into Falling Skies.

This film was dreadful. Liebesman managed to make an alien invasion film that was totally and completely inert. It was an abject bore from beginning to end. The script and dialogue was just laughably bad.

It's funny that people keep comparing it to ID4 but it's rather anti-ID4. Yes, they managed to knock down one control center in one city. However, given how that thing was dug in like a tick and the ground troops still have weapons that far outmatch anything the human ground troops have at their disposal, it's hardly the upbeat "rah rah rah" ending of ID4.

If I were to accuse them of ripping off another movie's ending, it'd be Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World that had a "the adventure continues" type of ending.

As for the dialogue, most of it was issuing orders. There was barely a corny line in there. And the closest they came was with Nantz' speech at the end and even that was short and sweet. Plus it amounted to "yes, I mourn the loss of my soldiers but I accomplish nothing being a blubbering baby about it in the middle of combat". If anything, that's a huge fuck you to the types of speeches that were at the heart of movies like ID4.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles (2011, Dir-Liebesman, Eckhart)

Rented the bluray of this today. I often heard it was supposed to be Black Hawk Down with aliens. I really enjoyed BHD so after watching this movie I have to say those comparisons are a goddamn slap to the face of Ridley Scott.

This movie is simply atrocious. Thats not even an exaggeration of what I felt while watching this thing. All the soldiers came across as complete braindead retards. I hated all of them. I put all the blame on the writers for that. The soldiers delivered some of the most horrific lines of dialogue ever to be spoken.

I dont even want to get into detail about the action because Ill get nauseous all over again. I couldnt tell what the fuck was going on. I couldnt tell where the hell the soldiers were and what the hell they were shooting at. This was edited by a poor man's Michael Bay. Just terrible.

The only praise I can give this shit is that the bluray looked and sounded great on my home theater. Fuck the rest.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles (2011, Dir-Liebesman, Eckhart)

the summer blockbusters that make the money come out after school goes out. the oscar nominations around christmas. everything else is meant to break even, turn a small profit or be a tax loss. means don't expect too much from any movie that comes out before July 1st or after labor day and outside the end of year shopping season

and BHD wasn't that good either. i liked it the first time, but almost fell asleep on the second

This movie made Skyline look like Citizen Kane.

I'm in that camp. I had fun with Battle LA and thought Skyline was mind-numbing boring.

Skyline was a triumph compared to this.

Skyline isn't THAT bad... but it's not good. Batte LA was so overhyped and delivered so poorly that it's hard to imagine anyone caring for it.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles (2011, Dir-Liebesman, Eckhart)

Definitely a movie that borrowed from MUCH better movies (ID4 and Black Hawk Down for example - hell the ending is EXACTLY from BHD) but was just... boring. Aaron Eckhart is the only actor in the movie who did a good job in my opinion. It's as if he didn't realize the movie he was in was not good.
