favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
I know 'musical' can mean three different things, and that's how I'll ask the question:
A) what are your favorite 'music' moment 'cue'/specific scenes in terms of score, specifically written for the movie? B) what are your favorite scenes where the music is sourced from an album? C) what are your favorite scenes that features song and/or dance number written for the movie: (and even though I made the question sound like you have to one singular answer, you can add as many as you want) A) 1 - Bell scene from 1492: Conquest of Paradise 2 - departure of E.T., John Williams at his best, the whole scene didn't even have to have the dialogue and the emotions would have been equally powerful 3 - opening murder from Suspiria 4 - 'Don Giovanni' scene from Amadeus 5- Lily singing to the unicorn - Legend 6 - train scene across the water - Spirited Away 7 - opening eagle flying scene - Rescuers Down Under 8 - chase and asteroid scene - Empire Strikes Back B) 1 - 'Sweet Harmony' - Strange Days 2 - 'Perfect Day' - Trainspotting 3 - 'Cosmic Castaway' by Electrasy - Titan AE 4 - 'Your Song' - Moulin Rouge! 5 - 'Layla' - Goodfellas 6 - 'Carmina Burana' - scene from Excalibur C) 1 - 'Cool' - West Side Story 2 - 'And the Money Kept Rolling In' - Evita 3 - 'Make them Laugh' - Singin' in the Rain 4 - 'Up There' - South Park: The Movie 5 - 'Pinball Wizard' - Tommy 6 - 'You Can't Stop The Beat' - Hairspray (2007) 7 - 'Bright Eyes' - Watership Down |

The score is the highlight of that entire sequence and in continuing the theme of animated movies, while Disney's Pocohontas was critically maligned (for the most part) I think that the score is the film's best asset, notably the end theme when Pocahontas is watching John Smith leave on the ship - the movie builds and builds to such a crescendo, it a emotional sad/happy finale that the music beautifully compliments. |
Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
Limiting myself to three each:
A) what are your favorite 'music' moment 'cue'/specific scenes in terms of score, specifically written for the movie? Once Upon a Time in The West "L'America di Jill" and then the same melody in "Finale" - Edda Dell'Orso can make me cry like a bitch. Ichi the Killer - rooftop battle, where the music threatens to distort your perception of time. Get Carter "Carter Takes A Train" - harpsichord, double bass, tablas; simple but awesome. B) what are your favorite scenes where the music is sourced from an album? Fucking Åmål "I Want to Know What Love Is" - "We're so fucking cool." Bad Lieutenant "Signifying Rapper" - Schoolly D >>>>>> Led Zeppelin. No more fucking rock n' roll. Stranger Than Paradise ""I Put a Spell on You" - self-explanatory C) what are your favorite scenes that features song and/or dance number written for the movie: It's Always Fair Weather "I Shouldn't Have Come (The Blue Danube)" - a musical number for three conflicting inner monologues. The Sound of Music "Do-Re-Mi" - I am a sucker for musical numbers that incorporate jumps in time and/or space. The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella "Tell Him Anything (But Not That I Love Him)" - one of those soaring fairy tale tearjerkers, but with a twist. |
Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
A) The end of both Rocky fights with Apollo when that music hits

Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
C) It's got to be the Trolley Song from Meet Me in St Louis. Just explosively up beat. Possibly the best pop performance of the 20th century. And I'm not at all a Garland freak.

Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
I'll have to think about this some more -- I know there are definitely specific moments that make me want to straight-up applaud -- but my recent viewing of Back to the Future was yet another reminder of how much I love that score. If I had to single out at least a section of the movie, if not a moment, all of the music once Marty pulls up to the clock tower after the dance through to when he's back in 1985 is great.

Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)
I have to admit, one of my top answers for A) would be the "Battle of the Mounds" sequence in Conan the Barbarian.
