RIP movie producer Dino De Laurentiis
I didn't realize he was that old
Rex Features Legendary producer Dino De Laurentiis has died at the age of 91. De Laurentiis, whose career in cinema spanned more than 70 years and 160 movies, passed away in Los Angeles, according to Italian media reports. De Laurentiis established himself as one of Italy's leading post-war producers, working on neorealist films and collaborating with Federico Fellini on La Strada (1954), for which he shared a 'Best Foreign Language' film Oscar with Carlo Ponti, and Nights of Cabiria (1956). He produced the Jane Fonda cult classic Barbarella in 1968 before relocating to the US in the 1970s. His Hollywood credits include Al Pacino's Serpico, Three Days Of The Condor, the 1976 King Kong remake, Flash Gordon, Dune and Body Of Evidence. De Laurentiis's biggest success came with his big screen adaptations of Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lector character. He produced Manhunter, Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising, but passed on the opportunity to make 1991's Oscar-winning The Silence Of The Lambs. De Laurentiis is survived by wife Martha De Laurentiis, their two children, and four children from his first marriage to Silvana Mangano. Also he produced the 2 evil dead sequels, and blue velvet as well |

While he might have had a bombastic reputation, no denying he knew the meaning of spectacle. I don't think he ever admitted that huge robot Kong he had built was not the one used for every shot. :D

I love the 84 Dune, esp the extended version. I've had his Kong for ages but have never had the chance to watch it.

Re: RIP movie producer Dino De Laurentiis
If I had to pick a favorite out of his immense output, it would have to be BARBARELLA. The similarly titled BARABBAS is pretty damned good, too, although a very different kind of film (a biblical spectactular). GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES and DANGER: DIABOLIK aren't bad either.
He worked with some hot actresses, too. He even married one, Silvana Mangano, and produced a lot of her movies. And some of Sophia Loren's early movies, too. And early movies with Gina Lollobrigida and Virna Lisi. He sure could pick 'em. When he started working in the U.S. in the '70s, though, he was stuck with the likes of the Hemingway sisters and Jessica Lange. Too bad. |

Re: RIP movie producer Dino De Laurentiis
There aren't many producers that are somewhat household names (at least among film nerds). RIP, and thanks for Dune.

Probably my favorite producer of all time.

Re: RIP movie producer Dino De Laurentiis
There's a pretty neat documentary out there called Dino Di Laurentis: The Last Movie Mogul. One of the people they talk to is David Lynch, and Lynch talks about the things he learned from Dino, including not to put off anything to tomorrow, or in an hour, or in 15 min - do it as soon as you think of it.
