Hero vs Fearless: which is the better Martial Arts film?
I just watched of these films back to back, and thought they were both excellent. I cannot decide which one I enjoyed more, so I'd like to ask you guys what your thoughts are which film *YOU* enjoyed more?

Re: Hero vs Fearles: which is the better Martial Arts film?
Both classic films. While Hero has the better story, Fearless has the superior fight sequences and hence more re-watchability. My vote is Fearless by the slimmest of margins.

I need to see both again, but I remember liking HERO much better. Of course I saw it on the big screen, while I saw FEARLESS on DVD. FEARLESS may have the better martial arts scenes, in terms of fighting technique and all, while HERO's fight scenes were more stylized. HERO was just beautiful to watch. FEARLESS may have had the better story, though. I was a bit upset with FEARLESS because I thought an earlier version of the same story, LEGEND OF A FIGHTER (1982), starring Leung Kar Yan and Yasuaki Kurata, was the better film. (It was directed by Yuen Wo Ping, who did the fight scenes for FEARLESS.) I re-watched LEGEND OF A FIGHTER after seeing FEARLESS and I did a comparison on another forum, but I forget what I said about them. It may be that I liked the fact that the earlier film was about his early life, which I found more interesting.

'Hero' is one of those rare masterpieces, a pretty much perfect film. So as far as better movie I would choose 'Hero', as it's one of the best movies ever made. As far as the martial arts aspect, that's rather subjective.
I really liked 'Fearless' too. Fantastic movie.

Definitely Fearless. Jeff Bridges is way cooler than Jet Li.

I have not seen the Director's Cut of Fearless or the Original Chinese version of Hero, which has never been made available here in the US.
However, I still feel as though I can say Hero is a million times over the better film. I could barely stand Fearless -- it was a non-stop bore that was determined to put me to sleep. Hero is as close to perfection as you can find with a film.

DC Fearless is MUCH different from the US cut.
Chinese Hero isn't THAT big of a difference...just...minor fuck ups on translation in a VERY important moment. I think that was it. Right? I can't remember.

I'd probably say Hero was a better overall movie, but Fearless was a bit better as a straight-up martial arts movie, IMO.

Re: Hero vs Fearless: which is the better Martial Arts film?
You guys prefer the 92 minute China cut of 'Hero' to the 99 minute international cut?
Why exactly?
Or did you mean to indicate the 107 minute extended cut when you said 'original Chinese'?
The DC of 'Fearless' is the only one I've ever seen. Word got out fast about the theatrical cut.

We got the cut which IS 99 mins. As far as I know that's the cut China got too for TC.
CHINA on the other hand got on DVD, a 107 min cut. We don't have that here. That extended one shows specifically shows more of Moon at the the end and other little extensions here and there that DO make it a better film IMO.
We never got that cut here. Is it the DC or just extended? What's the official naming of this cut?

I've seen both, having bought Chinese region-free imports from YesAsia.com and other places. My main beef along with the dumbass subtitles (soldiers chanting "storm!"? Really?) was the transfer. Miramax's transfer was garbage, which was par for the course. That's why we called them "Mira-axe."

So you meant the DC/extended cut then, I was wondering why the 92 minute release in China would be preferred.

International (which as far as I know was the China TC too) or Extended is still a damn fine movie. I've NEVER heard of that 92 min. cut though.
What was cut?

It wasn't cut, that was the China release.
The international release was longer, then the extended cut was longer still.
