When a scene requires it: Are the actors smoking real pot?
'...but why do you care, Paul?' you might ask!
WELL!
Even 'I' wanna be hip JUST LIKE YOU!
So be cool and help out an OtterVille brother.
For the life of me, I could never fake toking on a home-rolled cigarette (tobacco) as if it were pot...you know, with the lips slightly open, mixing air with the smoke while inhaling simultaneously without coughing my BLASTED head off! Grass on the other hand, I could easily do the mix with air toke and not have a problem.
But actors do it ALL THE TIME and without coughing!
That's why I tend to believe it's real (...at least 9 times out of ten, based on clinical studies). I mean, why the HELL not?
Maybe that's why their called ACTORS!
After all, everyone's 'COOL' in SHOW BIZ, Right?

Totally cool. If you don't mind canceling your days shoot, and going over schedule and budget.
We never used tobacco in films, even for cigarettes, unless the actor smoke and insisted. We used strawberry leaf cigarettes, when I was prop assistant.
I believe actor's smoke real pot almost never.

Well, if you've been smoking it for years, I believe you could and it wouldn't mess up anything.
From my own experience, Pot is not a heavy intoxicator and never was. (For 'me' anyway.)

When's the last time you smoked? From what I hear the stuff out there today is multiple times more potent than the stuff 10 or 20 years ago. And even back then, a few bong hits put me in a stupor that made it hard to do anything but open a bag of Doritos.

I'd have a hard time acting stoned (at least my natural stoned self) without weed. I also cannot stand ciggys so they'd have to being using some other sort of alternative if I were in a movie.*

So, what you're saying is that Doug Benson wasn't really smoking pot in "Super High Me"???
No wonder the second half sucked so bad.

There is really good weed out there now, but it's not much stronger than weed grown by experienced growers in the 70's.
Hash and hash oil has been smoke for decades, and they are much stronger. Hash oil is pretty stout, I've never had anything like it.

This open again?
As mentioned 'Easy Rider', Tommy Chong said they smoked a lot of real stuff in their movies. There have been cases, but not many. I would say today it might be real in a few small indie films possibly, but not in anything mainstream.

I believe there was a scene in the first Evil Dead where everyone sits around and smokes pot where they used real pot. Bruce Campbell said the scene was reshot later because everyone got giggly, rambled and couldn't remember their lines.

Not according to Mitch Hedburg:
"
I had a small scene in a movie with Peter Frampton. And we had to smoke pot for our scene - but it was fake pot! Do not buy pot on a movie set. But I got to smoke fake pot with Peter Frampton, that's a cool story. It's as cool as smoking real pot with a guy who looks like Peter Frampton... I've done that way more. "
Gosh, I miss Mitch.

Re: When a scene requires it: Are the actors smoking real pot?
I know from the DVD commentary that Jack Black and Kyle Gass used real weed in the ending scene to 'Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny'.
