Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
don't misunderstand me, while i like the F13 movies more as a whole. the orignial NoES will remain one of my favorite horror movies of all time. in fact, my PC background is a constant reminder to get me to watch it again (hopefully before October is over)...

That's a kickass background. Where'd you get the original image?

Same here; it's really got everything you could want from a horror slasher. Is there any possibility the X rated cut will ever be released?
As for how I'd rank 'em, I agree with every last word Suprmallet posted. |

Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
this Legacy docu is truly amazing. i had no idea Frank Darabont co-wrote Dream Warriors or that Renny Harlin directed Dream Master and that he was so willing to talk about it.

Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
Nightmare. Freddy's a "cooler" baddie, and I like the bizarro world of the various dreams.
I'll give F13 points for the stalking nature of the films and Jason though. Jason seems like more of an unstoppable force of nature, whereas you can sometimes fool or outsmart Freddy. I guess that's part of the appeal, if Jason can't be stopped, then there's not much use in challenging him, whereas with Freddy you want to see how the star will be victorious [temporarily]. |

Friday The 13th.
I don't like the Nightmare on Elm St. movies at all. The Halloween series is the best of all, though. But I guess that's a given. |

Not likely. From what I understand, the film elements/extra footage from The New Blood were apparently all thrown out by Paramount in the 90's - the uncut scenes now only exist in the extremely low quality workprint footage that you can see as an extra on the most recent DVD.

Not in a form we'd want. Paramount destroyed all that footage. When the last boxed set was being put together, there was a pretty intensive search, and nothing pristine was turned up. Workprint quality is the best there'll probably ever be, disappointingly.

I've always been a bigger Jason fan, and I think he's got more enjoyable/solid entries than Freddy.

^ Even II? I'll admit that one was dumbed down from the original, but it makes for a great double feature.

Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
Overall, my vote would go to F13. My favorite individual move out of the 2 series would be NOES 3 but I think F13 held up better as a whole.
All things considered, Halloween 1 & 2 both sit at the top, laughing down at the rest. |
Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th for me and without a second thought.
Probably like a lot of people here around my age (27) I fell into film by way of horror flicks and video rental stores. Both NoES and F13 were franchises that managed to eclipse themselves and become something even greater in pop culture than I think could have been expected. When watching old TV shows from that era (and even onward into today) the hockey mask is iconic for Halloween specials, generic serial killer costume, references to any thing horror, etc. etc. More so than Freddy's glove. I always loved sneaking copies of video nasties past my parents and into the basement and some of the first movies I remember being part of that splatter-flick underground railroad were the Friday the 13th films. Hell, I remember just being mesmerized by the covers in the video store, especially once the mask became the center piece for the designs. While there are bad flicks in the series (even when I was 10 I knew part 8 was pretty damn awful), I've always thought it was the superior slasher to NoES. They've held up as I've gotten older and I've even found new respect for the films, especially when I was getting into Giallo films a decade or so ago. I really enjoy NoES and some of the wild, surreal dream sequences are great, but I never thought any of the movies truly lived up to their premise. I'll give it credit for originality and some pretty awesome effects and kill sequences, but for my money it's always going to be that big murderous retard. |
Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
I picked NOES because Part I, II (I know everyone else hates it), III and New Nightmare were very good movies IMO.
I found the original Friday the 13th a little boring, but the ending was really good. The sequel was much better and also had a very good ending. After that though, the rest of the films were kind of mindless. Then again, the rest of the Nightmare series was cheesy. Atleast NOES was very imaginative. |

It helped that Friday the 13th, Freddy's Nightmares, and Tales from the Darkside made it to television. Back to the the covers, I thought The Dream Master must have been the best in the series, with Freddy literally appearing as a giant being, tearing into the real world. |

One thing I've always wondered. Why do Nightmare fans love New Nightmare so much? Is it just because Wes Craven came back to direct or what? I've watched it so many times and just can't figure out its appeal. I can honestly say it might be one of my least favorite horror movies I've ever seen. I was looking forward to seeing it after hearing so many good things about it and was just really disappointed and still find it to be a weak entry in the series.

Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
I've always preferred the woodsy atmosphere of the F13 films. I like the first three Nightmare films, but they're way too fantastical and wise-cracky after that.

Re: A Nightmare on Elm Street vs. Friday the 13th
Just my general impression but I think New Nightmare is on the more serious side of the franchise, with NOES and Dream Warriors right there with it. It's more about imagery and suspense than pure horror and I can see how when compared to Dream Master/Child it's not the same.
