Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Deadline Hollywood has posted that Paranormal Activity 2 did $6.3 million during the 10pm - midnight hours of last night; biggest midnight opening ever for an R-rated film.
So, um, I guess we will be all seeing Paranormal Activity 3 next Halloween instead of Saw VIII. |
Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Seems like it, people like "boo" jumps and PA2 certainly seems to offer them up.

Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Too bad that won't count towards their bottom line for the weekend, unless Paramount wants to be lame and add it in. I'm guessing it'll do $25m tops.

I wonder if PA2 will make a profit, it had to cost a ton to make.

Undoubtably. I know for a fact it's behind Avatar and the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but not by much.
It's funny how Lionsgate made big news by making a low budget horror franchise with saw (each costing around 10 million). Paramount comes along and makes a franchise with home video cameras. |
Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Boxoffice.com had $28 mil for the weekend, but I think it could get closer to $35 mil or so.

Hell yeah. I'm happy that PA 2 is doing well.
I'm planning to watch it this sat nite. |

Friday $18.5M (including a record $6.3M midnight gross), Estimated Weekend $35M On a budget of $3 million! Earlier in the day, Paramount was gushing to me what a "spectacular number" $6.3 million is for the Paranormal Activity sequel's midnight screenings from 1,800 screens, which passed Watchmen's $4.6 million as the highest midnight grosser for an "R"-rated film of all time. "The film had its roots at midnight so it was positioned as opening at midnight Thursday night," a studio exec explained to me. Whereas the first film started off as a sleeper in a few locations and expanded its release week by week as word of mouth grew and a smart TV ad campaign got going, Paramount for the sequel has secured 3,216 locations for today's North American box office. Hollywood was convinced that PA2 could crack break the $30 million barrier for the full weekend, always tough for any R-rated flick, but $35M is truly overperforming. It's certainly bigger than the best weekend of the first which was $21.1 million. Also Rotten Tomatoes is showcasing strong positive reviews for a horror film at 75%, which is almost as good as the original's 82%. "There is no Blair Witch curse here," a Paramount exec gushed to me by email. 2. Jackass 3D (Paramount) Week 2 [3,111 Theaters] Friday $7.7M, Estimated Weekend $24.5M, Estimated Cume $90M 3. Red (Summit) Week 2 [3,273 Theaters] Friday $4.5M, Estimated Weekend $13.5M 4. Hereafter (Warner Bros) Week 2 [2,181 Theaters] Friday $4M, Estimated Weekend $11.5M 5. Secretariat (Disney) Week 3 [3,108 Theaters] Friday $2M, Estimated Weekend $6.5M If it did $18.5 million on Friday and they're predicting only a $35 million weekend, that means it's going to drop more than 50% tomorrow (or technically today as I'm posting this at 12:32 AM). If you reduce the $6.3 million taken from midnight, you're left with a true $12.2 million gross for Friday. Now for shits and giggles, the film contains no drops and picks up another $12 million for Saturday, you're still at almost $32 million for the weekend with Sunday still not having entered the picture. $40 million opening weekend, I can see. Something higher? I wouldn't be surprised. $35 million or less? I don't think so. |
Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
All I know is that it must be all smiles at Paramount this weekend. Approximately $100m in profit on a $23m investment.

It had drops of 11% on Saturday and 45% on Sunday. I think PA2 will be better received. Of course, The Ring Two opened in March, so it didn't have football to deal with, so it's not an exact comparison. |
Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Unadjusted for inflation, The Grudge has the highest October opening for a horror movie at $39.1 mil.
IF you assume Signs and The Village are both horror, as box office mojo does, then they both have higher openings overall. If you don't, then PA2 should be the new record holder for the horror genre. |
Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Whether it's 35 or 40mill for the wknd, that's pretty impressive. I guess we'll see PA3 next October...

Deadline does that sometimes. They'll give the Friday estimates, and then Saturday and Sunday barely combine to match Friday's total. I'm assuming this will be another front loaded horror movie. So if it did $18 mil Friday, I'm guessing at most, a 25% drop today, which would be $13.5 mil. Even assuming a massive 40% drop for Sunday, that is still another $8.1 mil for a total of $39.6 mil. Unless today and tomorrow completely tank, then this should be over $40 mil.

Of course, The Ring Two opened in March, so it didn't have football to deal with, so it's not an exact comparison. You more or less have to ignore the midnight gross when estimating a drop for Saturday or Sunday. So say in actuality it made around $12.3m on Friday. So they're assuming it will make around $9.5m on Saturday (a 22.7% drop) and around $7m on Sunday. A drop from Friday to Saturday is extremely common with horror movies. Seems reasonable to me. That said, the "usually" more accurate Box Office Mojo has Friday at over $20m, so in all likelihood, it will pick up closer to $40m. <center> <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tr><td Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Since Paramount spent $13 million (production + prints + advertising) and claims, let's lowball this number, 70% of the opening gross; yeah, Paramount is already profiting.

Re: Weekend Box Office (10/22-10/24): Paranormal Activity is the New Hotness
Especially since studios normally take a much higher % on opening weekend then later weeks. So it might not be the typical 3x budget+marketing to reach profits.
Either way, Paranormal 3 will be coming. |
