It’s been known for a little while that Mr. Coscarelli has had the rights to the novel JOHN DIES AT THE END, written by Cracked.com’s David Wong (real name Jason Pargin), but what hasn’t been so widely known is that Don’s been covertly filming the movie.
The film is about two twenty-something losers who gain extra sensory perception via a substance called Soy Sauce, a black liquid that acts like a potent drug, but seemingly has a mind of its own. They see a lot of crazy shit… mustaches ripping off of people’s faces, a monster made of cold cuts and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. John Dies At The End is a great book, laugh out loud funny and bizarre. It’s like Terry Gilliam wrote a Douglas Adams story in the vain of Ghostbusters. I highly recommend picking up a copy of the book if you enjoy reading things that are good. Or you can wait for the movie and let it wash all over you that way, you illiterate bastard. If Don Coscarelli isn’t enough for you (shame on you) let’s add two names to this list: Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown. Giamatti plays a reporter the lead character is telling his story to and Brown is a supernatural expert who really knows what he’s doing, not like the clueless kids trying to fight the forces of evil. Giamatti’s also producing the film with his producing partner Dan Carey alongside Brad Baruh and Coscarelli himself. The two leads are played by newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes. I was on set for two nights and will have my set report to you as soon as they give me the greenlight, but I will say I liked these guys together and if what I saw was any indication of what the final film is going to end up being you’ll be hearing a lot about both of these guys in the future. So, there you have it. Don Coscarelli is behind the camera again and he has Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown doing his bidding! Don’t think I’d leave you with just boring old words. Not me. This does look great. The book was excellent, and the Coscarelli seems perfect for the material (and the trailer is very promising).
Does anyone know what the deal has been with Coscarelli and his miniscule film output? Bubba-Ho-Tep was his last feature, and believe it or not that's almost 10 years ago. And all he has to show for the 12 years before that are a couple of Phantasm sequels. Has he been stuck in some kind of financing nightmare to get his projects off the ground most of this time? Until Bubba, I had written him off as a one-trick pony (Phantasm). But Bubba was so good, it had wondering why he spend most of the last 20 years on Phantasm sequels.

I do know there's a script for another Phantasm movie but the cost to produce it is apparently very prohibitive due to how ambitious it is.

It looks like there's going to be quite a bit of mixed feelings on this movie. I can tell it will be alright but this is just the trailer. I could be wrong or right, it's in the air.

Speaking of which, here's the Intro and Q&A (in two parts) for this screening. Turned out to be one of the two best sessions of all fifteen films I've seen at this year's festival (the other was with the directors of COMRADE KIM GOES FLYING, a North Korean film, so go figure). I saw this last night at an advance screening in Columbus Ohio. I really enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of Bubba Ho-Tep and while the acting level in this film is not up to the high standards of BHT it does have as many laughs and the plot is clever and certainly never boring.
Crowd seemed to have mixed reactions with a portion of us laughing throughout and some people never seemed to quite get on board with the tone of the film. I don't see this getting a wide release but I predict it will do well on dvd/blu release. |

I ordered this on demand last night.
It's really fucking out there. I could already tell halfway through the film that this is something which requires a second viewing. There's just so much going on it's nearly impossible to understand and process all of it in one viewing. But I liked it. The acting was solid across the board. Loved seeing Scrimm, Jones, Giamatti, a bizarre Dan Roebuck... it's a great genre cast. The FX were good, even the CG work wasn't nearly as low-budget as I expected. It's just really, really bizarre. |

Watched this last night. Good movie, especially considering the budget and time limitations. I'm not sure what else could've been done with the same constraints. To fans of the book, the movie definitely stayed true to its spirit and general plot. And if you've just seen the movie, there's a whole lot more in the book for you to enjoy (and even a sequel that I haven't had the chance to read yet).
This seems to be getting mixed reviews (though you have to take horror movie reviews with a giant grain of salt, since many general reviewers are biased against the genre). Most critiques mention the SFX, which is a factor not completely within the filmmakers control (for their budget). Having read the book, they scaled things back as far as they could (even completely cutting out the biggest action set-piece in the story). For me, there were only a couple of moments where I thought the low budget really hurt: Spoiler:
Many critiques comment that the movie went downhill in the second half. Which I don't get ... unless viewers unfamiliar with the book just start to feel tired with all the plot craziness and rapid dialog. Maybe it would've been better to develop some of the characters better. For example, Spoiler:

I finished the book the other day. the movie was only playing only at one theater and i knew it wouldn't play there long. i loved the book but i'm a slow reader and i missed it playing by a few days. so i rented it through amazon. it was a long night prior, i think i started watching it at 6ish AM.
Anyway, i thought it sucked. the movie that is. I know the budget just wasn't enough, nor time. plus the haze i was in when i watched, may not of helped. I think what really killed it was actually reading the book first. And i knew the movie was out so while i'm reading it i'm envisioning as how the movie would tackle certain things. what was in my mind and what ended up on the screen were wildly different. I really wished i had seen the movie first and then read the book and that is the lynch pin of my disappointment. |
