Re: Favorite year for theatrical movie releases?
1967
That was the year that all three of Sergio Leone's "Man with No Name" Italian westerns starring Clint Eastwood got released in the U.S.: A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY Also the year of four additional favorites: Robert Aldrich's THE DIRTY DOZEN, Howard Hawks' next-to-last movie EL DORADO, Roger Corman's ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, and the 5th and best James Bond film, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. Not to mention: BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE GRADUATE, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, THE INCIDENT, NIGHT OF THE GENERALS, THE TRIP, UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE, BEACH RED, THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST... Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, Shaw Bros. released ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, THE ASSASSIN and TRAIL OF THE BROKEN BLADE, three Chang Cheh/Jimmy Wang Yu masterpieces. In Japan, Toho released SAMURAI REBELLION and SON OF GODZILLA. In Italy, they released DANGER: DIABOLIK, A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL, ANY GUN CAN PLAY, and MATCHLESS. In England, they released FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH. A great year. |

I saw the documentary "“1939: Hollywood's Greatest Year” which comes with the Gone with the Wind Special Edition. And even though i haven't seen them all yet. It does look like an impressive catalog for a single year in the history of cinema.

Batman Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Lethal Weapon 2 Back to the Future 2 Ghostbusters 2 Star Trek V Road House I would go with 2002 for me: Spider-Man-had waited so long to see a live action film done right Star Wars:Attack of the Clones-okay, not a good one, but had the promise dang it! Road to Perdition Gangs of New York Chicago-didn't see it until early 2003 Signs Die Another Day Adaptation Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets- liked the first one so anticipated this one even more Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers- same as above, except moreso |

Damn 1967 just may be my fav too, contained many spy flicks like Danger Death Ray, Operation Double 007, Million Eyes of Sumuru. |
Re: Favorite year for theatrical movie releases?
From the 1970's it was 1977.
From the 1980's it was 1984. |
Re: Favorite year for theatrical movie releases?
My favorite year is still 1996. I grew up in a small town without a theater until the latter half of 1995. I'm not sure when it opened exactly, but I know it was after 16 July because we had to go to Louisville to see Batman Forever. The first movie I saw at our theater was Powder, selected by my date. The movie was even more disappointing than the brief relationship, but then that kicked off a frequent movie-going habit that ran through most of '96. I saw movies that year without even knowing a thing about them. It was a blast, and while I don't know how many of the movies I saw that year would rank highly with me in an "all-time" context, it's a demarcation of when I began to grow as a movie fan.

Re: Favorite year for theatrical movie releases?
I was curious what made '77 so great (other than Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Spy Who Loved Me) so I took a peak at Flickchart's global top 20 from that year. Spy isn't even in the top 20.
