Before clicking the link, I was fully expecting some low-budget piece of garbage. But this actually looks pretty fucking cool.

visually, it reminded me a lot of 300/sin city.

Looks sweet. I love movies with the 300/Sin City visual style. Just do whatever you want as long as it looks cool.

Looks like it'd be pretty cool, i'll check it out but my expectations will still be pretty low/moderate.

This looks like a Korean-Australian co-production, but IMDB says it's USA. That's weird. The director has no other credits listed (plus his name has the vowels in the wrong place). The star, Jang Dong Gun, was the star of the South Korean Korean War movie, TAE GUK GI, an excellent war movie if you haven't seen it. Also in the cast here are an Australian, Geoffrey Rush, and an American, Kate Bosworth.

I remember when they used to do movies like this without CGI. I liked them better that way. There were some Italian westerns that mixed samurai and cowboys or put kung fu in the old west. Check out THE STRANGER AND THE GUNFIGHTER with Lee Van Cleef and Lo Lieh. Or RED SUN with Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune. Or TODAY WE KILL, TOMORROW WE DIE, with Bud Spencer and Tatsuya Nakadai.

The scope of the visuals certainly manages to outweigh their low rent execution. I am so there for this.

Re: A Warrior's Way. Ninjas Vs. Cowboys

I found this mash-up of Cowboys and Ninjas to be fairly uncompelling to watch, so I basically checked out of the film half-way through it. Basic storyline, 2 different "gangs" fight each other until one day, one bad-ass sword-wielding warrior takes down the other gang's bad-ass sword-wielding warrior, and becomes top dog, and wipes out his enemies, all except for a baby girl, who he adopts, and decides to go on the run and not make war anymore. This leads him to the small town full of carnivale misfits. The lead warrior-ninja dude didn't speak much English, and his predicament wasn't really all that involving. But, I will say that it was sort of refreshing to see Kate Bosworth actually put on a extroverted performance (and twangy accent to boot).

With so much of the film shot on stage with greenscreen backdrops, the film just feels so... blah. Even with the swordfights, CGI blood sprays from the slashed-up ninjas, etc., it just didn't have much excitement going for it.

I give it 2 stars or a grade of C.

How would you compare it to Ninja Assassin? I thought that was bad ass.

Ninja Assassin was much more visceral, less concerned with being operatic in the display of martial arts meets gun-play (then again, can't remember if there was any gun-play in Ninja Assassin).

So I guess you're saying I most likely wouldn't dig this one.

At the least, it looks like it'll be entertaining. I wouldn't see it in theaters, though.

Apparently nobody is seeing it in theaters, it looks to make $2.1m for the weekend.

Doesn't surprise me. Studios seldom give wide releases to movies in which they have a lot of confidence on the first weekend after the Thanksgiving one. Almost everyone is busy watching College Football games on the Saturday.
Next weekend will see the major releases return.

For the record, this movie has been sitting on the shelf for nearly three years, that should speak volumes as to it's overall quality.

I highly enjoyed it. It was better than Ninja Assassin in my book.

I didn't even enjoy Ninja Assassin, but thought this looked like fun based on the previews. What are the odds of me enjoying this?

Re: A Warrior's Way. Ninjas Vs. Cowboys

I thought Ninja Assassin was entertaining for what it was, but this wasnt too good... I was wishing for the movie to be over and was a chore to finish. For this type of movie, Im fairly easy to please, and just could never really get into it. Maybe fine as a rental or HBO/Showtime viewing.

Re: A Warrior's Way. Ninjas Vs. Cowboys

I saw this today. Misguided script, amateurish directing. Why the hell is Geoffry Rush in this? Overall, it's a creaky, lopsided film. Their music selections for the soundtrack are sometimes utterly bizarre and completely inappropriate, and only add to the kludgy feeling of the film
