John McTeirnan is actually a pretty interesting choice.
I'll see your McTeirnan, and raise you Shane Black.

I wonder if Favreau knows something about The Avengers that wants to make him bail on the third Iron Man which is supposed to be a direct sequel.

Not even. The guy has made 1 decent movie in 20 years ("The Thomas Crown Affair") and the days of Die Hard, Predator, and The Hunt For Red October are long since over.
FANTASTIC idea Given how well Black and Downey fit each other's sensibilities with "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", this sounds like a done deal to me.

I like Favreau's vision for the characters and the universe, but the direction just wasn't always there. Hopefully they get a good replacement.

Favreau would have been great doing to character stuff and bringing in someone else to do the action.
He apparently hired Gendy Tartakovsky to storyboard all the action for "Iron Man 2" but even that wasn't enough to elevate him from an merely average action director.
If Whedon does great with The Avengers and Marvel wants Iron Man 3 to be the sequel, I say they just let Whedon do it.

This... plus make the last scene with Rourke actually invoke something of an epic battle. It was over so quick I was waiting for him to still be alive somehow.
