Re: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (David O. Russell to Write/Direct)

You know what? I like this casting. Wahlberg has proven himself to be a surprisingly versatile actor. After seeing The Other Guys, I think he could pull it off with the right amount of humor.

Is there anyone who has ever played this game, that thought while playing "man, you know who would be the perfect Drake. . . . Mark Wahlberg!"

Adaptations require changes. Wahlberg is by far not the worst choice Russell could have made.

I'm not getting "good vibrations" from this casting.

There's no need to create brand new characters for the feature film, especially if it's going to be based on the plot of the first game. Not to mention they have perfect actors in Nathan Fillion and Bruce Campbell. But even if you don't want to go with Fillion, there has to be someone else; Wahlberg just doesn't seem a good fit for Drake. I guess he wasn't satisfied just being Max Payne?
Well, I said I thought Jon Hamm would be good. He may not be a huge star just yet, but he seems to be ready for a breakout movie role.

No, adaptations require change in story. But good adaptations should not require change when it comes to being faithful to the source characters. This is largely why the Star Trek reboot worked so well. If you are going to cast an actor that doesn't resemble the adapted character in any way personality wise or looks, then just call the movie something else. Drake is a charming, fun character, two things I've never seen Wahlberg be in any movie.

Wahlberg is by far not the worst choice Russell could have made.

Being that he is one of my least favorite actors ever, I beg to differ, and for once, others here seem to share the disappointment and rightly so.

Re: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (David O. Russell to Write/Direct)

Wahlberg is one of my favorite actors but he's all wrong for Drake. And although Drake owes a lot to Dr. Jones, I don't like the idea of DeNiro as Drake's dad cos that makes me think this'll be The Last Crusade Lite.

So is Pesci gonna be Sullivan or Roman?

This sucks. I really hope the story is at least good enough to get me to see this. Or I'll just wait till video and tape Fillions face on the screen

Re: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (David O. Russell to Write/Direct)

Set aside your concerns about Mark Wahlberg portraying PlayStation 3 action hero Nathan Drake in the big screen adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, because it doesn't sound like this movie is based on the video game at all.

Uncharted director David O. Russell tells the LA Times that he sees Nathan Drake and his extended family as some sort of global antiquities squad that dispenses treasure-hunting justice. This must be the concept that Mr. Wahlberg described as "so off the charts."

"This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice," Russell said, which actually sounds more like Indiana Jones' motivation.

That family may include Wahlberg's potential co-stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, transforming this Nathan Drake adventure into a film that could be easily titled Uncharted: Antiquity Mafia.

For more details on Russell's "really cool idea," read on, lucky Uncharted fans!

'Drake's Fortune' director David O. Russell: Movie will be about family of thieves and global power players [LA Times]

Sure, a downward decline is technically off the charts, so I can agree with this.

I guess in some rare usages of the word, you can mean it in terms of bad luck, so this statement also still works.

I think using "really cool idea" and "lucky" was meant to be sarcastic. The overall tone of the article seems to be critical of the choices Russell is making, not complimentary.

So...you buy the rights to make a movie...based on a video game...that isn't actually based on the video game at all? So you're really buying the NAME of the video game and the characters? Because you couldn't think up your own? I don't understand what the fuck is going on with this project.

"Hey treasure, how's it goin'? So you're a silver toothpick, right, what's that all about? Okay, well it was great to meet you. Now I'm gonna talk to a golden turtle. Hey golden turtle. You're a turtle. My show Entourage has a character named Turtle. Have you see Entourage? It's on HBO. Anyway, it was good to talk to you. Say hi to your mother for me."

So, I'm assuming Naughty Dog sold the rights and has no involvement/say in it? I wonder how they're feeling.... they are doing an Uncharted 3 right?

Re: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (David O. Russell to Write/Direct)

Pretty clear at this point that David O. Russell just wanted the recognizable brand name, not the actual character.
