Inception is considered sci-fi. Name one sci-fi film that has won Best Picture. (Return of the King is fantasy and doesn't count.)

Um, maybe because it is a souless, uninvolving one trick pony movie that does not hold up to repeat viewings and is criminally overrated?

Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty good movie, but I really don't get how it won best picture at the Golden Globes

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

remember, not only are the academy 6000-strong and mostly over 50, they are also nearly a third British. It's no surprise The King's Speech received the most nominations, and it'll sweep the BAFTAs with (i'm betting) 9 or 10 wins.

Watch the media play up the America vs. Britain card in the coming weeks. Those comparisons between The Social Network and Citizen Kane (a quintessential American tragedy) will re-emerge in a desperate bid to sway the vote.

There wasn't much doubt that The King's Speech would take the SAG Ensemble award, since it's got the outstanding British actor lineup that always wins actor-y prizes, so I'm not sure how much of an effect that has on the Oscar race (other than further solidifying TKS's assumed lead). However, I think the other 4 wins pretty much confirm the eventual winners of those Oscar categories.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Yeah definitely game over for The Social Network. It's amazing how The King's Speech has kind of come out of nowhere and in two weeks has completely changed the game. I don't recall this type of momentum swing in an award season. The DGA award last night was stunning and tonight pretty much sealed the fate of The Social Network.

I'm still not entirely sure Fincher won't win the Best Director prize as a sort of consolation prize for TSN though. It's not unprecedented.

Oh I looked it up.

I really don't see how anybody can even compare them. Even though I find Citizen Kane to be a boring movie, I respect it for everything it did as far as film making. Social Network is just another good, but overrated, movie.

Wait, that's just like Citizen Kane. I see where the comparisons are coming from now.

No, The King's Speech is actually a good movie.

It is, however, almost every cliche people make fun of the academy for.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

So after watching the SAG Awards I just hope Hollywood is able to unionize!

Oh wait, you mean they already have unions and all the talk was about 2 existing unions merging? At least the acceptance speeches didn't fall prey to the same prisoner of the moment and hyperbole.

I'm all for unions, and they play an important role in society, but to see how it was portrayed during the SAG Awards was a bit absurd, especially the 'shout outs' to the Teamsters union who plowed the streets... (silly me I didn't realize unions were responsible for plowing). How about instead of thanking the unions, just thanking the employees responsible for the work? It's not the Teamsters who are actually hiring people, paying them, providing the equipment, etc....

I just wish someone had thanked the American AutoWorkers (AAW) Union for building the car that got them to the awards show. Well technically people belonging to the union built the car... but that's the same as the union being responsible for that work, isn't it?

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

God why should I even watch the Oscars this year. Again it's lets go for the "safe" vote. This is going to go down as one of the worst years for Oscars if they go with King's Speech. Yea it's a good movie, but come on guys, it's a Masterpiece Theater film. Hell, even Carlos, for being a made for TV film, blows King's Speech out of the water. It really this years Chariots of Fire or better yet Driving Miss Daisy. And I've heard it all before about why Inception isn't the front runner. Give it a couple of years and people will come around to the fact that it's a masterpiece.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I'm 99.9% sure The King's Speech wins Picture. I won't say 100% since Apollo 13 did win the PGA, DGA, and the SAG, but lost Picture. Brokeback Mountain won the PGA, DGA, and WGA, but also lost BP. Little Miss Sunshine won the PGA, SAG, and WGA, and lost BP. So I do hold out that little speckle of hope. But assuming The King's Speech wins the WGA, I'm not sure any film that won all 4 major guilds lost BP.

However, the bigger tragedy may be Hooper taking Fincher's Director Oscar. I'd be more bothered by that happening vs The Social Network losing BP. There's a huge amount of great films that never won the Oscar. Oliver! is a Best Picture winner, but Citizen Kane isn't.

Of course, Hitchcock and Kubrick never won for Directing, so if Fincher never wins, he'll be in good company.

Kyuk Kyuk!

I also don't understand the love for Boardwalk Empire. I recently finished the first season and the show is all surface to me, it's beautiful to look at but the storylines are immensely uninteresting and a large chunk of the characters are damn cardboard cutouts. Buscemi doesn't really have the gravitas needed for a role like Nucky nor has the material really required him to stretch, but yet here he is, cleaning up at awards time.

I will be disappointed if Hooper takes home Best Director.

Same here. I'm used to my favorite movies losing Best Picture, but if Fincher loses, that'll be terrible. Everyone votes for Best Director, so that may help him.

Honestly, I don't care if Fincher loses as long as it isn't to Hooper. Him leading reeks of Weinstein.

I also thought the directing was the worst part of "The King's Speech".

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

In some years, release date doesn't seem to make all that much difference. However, I feel that The King's Speech release date is really, really helping them this year, especially if it is "good but forgettable" as many people have described it. Most of the people voting for it probably saw it within the past 30 days.

It is a masterpiece in some ways, but is far from a masterpiece in others. It does not deserve to win Best Picture any more than Titanic did, perhaps even less.

One compliment I can pay it is that it is definitely not Nolan's most overrated film.
