Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Moulin Rouge is also a previous PGA winner. It's going to come down to the Old Farts voting for the same old thing vs everyone else. TSN should easily take DGA and the WGA. Even if it loses the SAG, I'm confident it will win on Oscar night. Maybe the ACE will tell us who the front runner is going in.

I don't mean mainstream like Star Wars, I mean mainstream like Julia Roberts. Now adults and old people know her name.

I liked Rabbit Hole, but I don't see it getting a Best Picture nomination, especially after it's been left out of so many awards so far. It's more of a performances film, and I really appreciated the slow-reveal screenplay, so maybe it'll get some notice there.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Well, the nominations are tomorrow, so I'm putting my predictions on the table. I made this for work a week or so ago and I've had it up a while, so while I hope for some surprises, I'd hate to have to redo it!

Bob Hope was the host and he had a large staff of writers providing top gags. The year of GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, its stars, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, came out and did a softshoe number together before presenting an award. (I remember seeing this clip on a much later show.) In 1974, a streaker ran across the stage and co-host David Niven came up with a response on the spot about the streaker's "shortcomings" and the entire nation roared. As late as 1981, the dance legends known as the Nicholas Brothers came out, preceded by a montage of their film appearances, and did a dance before presenting an award. For film buffs like me, this was gold.

Today, alas, all the entertainers who could pull a nationwide audience of viewers are gone and there's little reason for many people to watch. People like Jon Stewart and Steve Martin, as skilled and talented as they may be, come from a very different show biz tradition, one with much narrower appeal. They're respected but not beloved. So the effect is going to be very different.

And I can't imagine how James Franco and Anne Hathaway could do anything at this ceremony that I would find remotely interesting. And I'm quite certain that a significant portion of the viewing audience will have no idea who Franco is and only a vague idea who Hathaway is.
Ah, nostalgia. Makes everything seem great, doesn't it?

So many of the things you mention were effective not because they were particularly awesome - they were merely the only thing to watch on TV that night. Movies used to be events, and people dressed up to go to the theater. They rarely saw stars off the screen. And bringing movies stars into the home was still relatively new as well.

Now I can probably find out what Natalie Portman was wearing yesterday with minimal effort. And what she ordered at Starbucks too. It's a different time, which calls for a different show. Hathaway is a pretty actress who has been in some popular movies. Franco was a part of one of the biggest franchises in history and has had several other high-profile projects recently, including a possible Best Picture nominated film. They are both likeable and attractive to a younger demo, which is all that TV ratings are concerned with.

The problem with the Oscars is that it's simply too long, and spends too much time on awards no one actually cares about. Best Foreign Film? We really give a shit about that being part of the telecast? It's just a "feel good" award and signals a time to either get popcorn or turn the channel until they get to the end.

I've said it before - they need to just showcase Best Pic, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and maybe Best Score, Best Costumes and Best Visual Effects. Throw in a fun open and a few interesting segments about the movie biz and call it good. 2 hours tops. I've mentioned before but that choir that performed all of the foley stuff a few years ago was cool and the kind of thing people would talk about the next day.

That telecast would get some viewers.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I would leave Foreign Film (the telecast has an international audience), but I would drop all the short film awards.

Also, I would award the set and costume awards in a separate ceremony (Art Direction, Costumes, Makeup) but announce them (briefly) in the main telecast. Possible the editing and sound awards too.

Face it, the entire ceremony should be done in a separate ceremony.

I'd argue that most of those international viewers are tuning in to see American movie stars, and not the 10 minutes or so spent on the Foreign Film category. But I have nothing to back that up.

I think some of that technical stuff should be there, because there are some viewers interested in that. Especially Visual Effects and Costumes. But the focus should be on the actors and director awards and best picture.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I think people are interested in who won (and by "who" I mean what film) a lot of the more technical awards than watching their acceptance speech -- that's the problem. It seems like the more obscure the individual, the longer their speech. "If you would have told me when I accepted this job two years ago, that it would be one of most challenging assignments of my life, I would have said blah blah blah blah thanks to my wife, Mary and my kids Bob, Jerry and Sue for putting up with me being gone so long -- don't play the music yet! blah blah blah blah the many long hours put in by my assistant Joe blah blah blah God blah blah blah the Academy blah."

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

That's a problem in general - if these winners gave an actual speech instead of just thanking people, it'd probably be worth watching.

I for one will be glad when it's all over, and Winter's Bone can crawl away and finally die the horrible death it so deserves.

HUGE to Winter's Bone getting in over The Town. And Chris Nolan is snubbed again.

The only thing missing from that film is a Lifetime Channel logo in the right hand corner.

Fixed. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if King's Speech pulled off a Best Picture win.

Doesn't deserve it, but it was a good movie at least.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I'm really not surprised that Nolan wasn't nominated. It was a summer sci-fi thriller. It's just not the kind of film they nominate for big awards if there aren't 10 spots.

And, to John Hawkes.
