One that comes to mind is the very last scene of At Close Range, when Sean Penn is asked who the man is sitting in the defendant's chair. Nothing less than brilliant acting.

It was the first one I thought of too. I think what makes that more memorable to me is that unlike most of the other actor moments mentioned in this thread prior to Mulholland Dr. I had no idea who Naomi Watts was.

Ricky Schroeder crying for his father at the end of at the Champ is probably the best performance by a child actor, in my opinion.

I was thinking this one also. I saw a documentary on Jaws recently and apparently the day this scene was supposed to be filmed, Robert Shaw came to work totally tanked and couldn't do it. The next day, he did it stone-cold sober and "knocked it out of the park".

This is also apparently the scene that put the crew at ease, knowing they had a good movie on their hands....

You made a great case for that scene and after refreshing my memory watching it again i concur. Added points for using "lackadaisical." Great word not used enough.

He gives her a death stare for a good five seconds.

Those five seconds are intense. I love it. Everything about Lewis's past - the crimes he's done, the time he's done, the men he's killed - everything is present in that moment of eyes filled with hate, a brow furrowed in rage, and a stoney, tight frown concealed under a giant mustache. The stare finally ends when both Lewis and Melanie look away from each other when they simultaneously realize something: not only is Lewis perfectly capable of killing Melanie over something like this, he honestly will do it if she doesn't shut up right now and both of them are pretty shook up by that.

Brilliant.

Billy Bob Thornton's scene where he is telling his brother (Bill Paxton) to kill him in A Simple Plan. "I'm tired."

That truly could be the worst scene in all of American cinema. It is so bad it just boggles the imagination.

It looks like Natalie Portman is trying her hardest not to burst out in laughter.

She was probably just thinking about how much money she was making.

Re: Best/ most memorable acting in a single scene

The restaurant scene with Steven Hill and Christine Lahti in Running on Empty.

The final scene in Breaker Morant.

This scene from Amadeus comes to mind:

And I cannot at least mention the Marisa Tomei voir dire/testimony scene from My Cousin Vinny

I haven't seen Amadeus since I was a kid, thank you for posting that.

I added a new video link to my post since the old video wasn't working, anymore.

the "skull" scene in Django Unchained. how Leo didn't get an oscar nod for that alone is mind boggling. He's legit fucking scary in that scene (and the blood on his hand is real)

Re: Best/ most memorable acting in a single scene

I agree with that scene from Amadeus. Although they didn't show it, there was a part where Mozart was dictating to Salieri, after Salieri finally "understood", and while Salieri was writing with his face down toward the paper, his hand extended out to Mozart as if to say "I'm listening", and to welcome all his knowledge to flow freely into him.

Anne Hathaway's "I Dreamed a Dream" scene was pretty remarkable in Les Mis. Definitely choked me up.

The interaction between Hackman and Stiller is beautiful and perfect for the moment.
