My favorite De Niro moment is in Jackie Brown:

Lewis (De Niro) is in the department store with Melanie (Bridget Fonda) on a stakeout and they're not getting along. Lewis is too uptight and anxious, Melanie is too lackadaisical and flippant. Melanie challenges Lewis with this: "Job a little too much for you?"

He gives her a death stare for a good five seconds.

Those five seconds are intense. I love it. Everything about Lewis's past - the crimes he's done, the time he's done, the men he's killed - everything is present in that moment of eyes filled with hate, a brow furrowed in rage, and a stoney, tight frown concealed under a giant mustache. The stare finally ends when both Lewis and Melanie look away from each other when they simultaneously realize something: not only is Lewis perfectly capable of killing Melanie over something like this, he honestly will do it if she doesn't shut up right now and both of them are pretty shook up by that.

Brilliant.

Found a video clip (01:00-01:20). If you want the line Mondo Kane quotes below, that's at 2:15-2:30.
MAJOR SPOILERS if you go beyond that; FYI, to those who haven't seen the movie...

Re: Best/ most memorable acting in a single scene

Added a video to my post above (watch 00:40-01:15 for the scene I wrote about and 2:10-2:25 to get the line Mondo Kane quoted). I wouldn't watch beyond that if you haven't seen the movie and don't want major spoilers, though...

It's interesting because you can tell it was written by Aaron Sorkin- like Mamet his characters have a way of using language that is unique to their writing styles.

Besides 'Alec in 'Glengarry'...

Wilford Brimley in 'Absence of Malice'. He was amazing.

I really cannot argue with this at all. Giamatti hit a home run from start to finish.

My stock answer to threads like this is the Christine Lahti/Steven Hill restaurant scene in Running On Empty.

Re: Best/ most memorable acting in a single scene

There's two scenes in Magnolia that I've always thought fit the bill (well, actually there's many moments in the movie that I could say but I'll just bring up two):

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RD__HgZGVsc?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RD__HgZGVsc?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

<object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sKxpaop6L6Q?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sKxpaop6L6Q?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>

I still remember every detail of when I was 16 and saw this movie in the theater, it impacted me so much, which the quality of acting brought into everyone of the characters was a large factor of.

I love/hate threads like this that make me want to pull out 30 different DVDs and cancel whatever plans I had for the day.

Re: Best/ most memorable acting in a single scene

I've always thought the stammering in this scene was perfect:

As for modern films, I go with Thomas Jane in the drug dealer scene in Boogie Nights.

It still amazes me that Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar. He has to be the one actor who's been in the most classic movies who's never won one. Has he even ever been nominated?

Bridges confirmed that every stammer was scripted and he couldn't have gotten away with deviating one word. That honestly makes the performance even more brilliant.
