Box Office Thread - 10/1 - 10/3/2010 - Social Network #1, Let Me In gets left out

I'm told The Social Network's grosses are still hard to read tonight as West Coast late shows could really drive numbers up. Which is why my sources have this much-buzzed-about Facebook origins pic ranging from $9M to $9.5M Friday (including $350K in post-midnight screenings) and from $24M to $27M this weekend. It logged a "B+" Cinemascore despite its very positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the book Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezerich, directed by David Fincher and produced by Scott Rudin, the film for weeks now has been touted for a Best Picture Oscar -- although it risks peaking too early with its early October release. But from a box office standpoint, that's the same weekend Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg last year stole every scene in Zombieland which also debuted to #1 with $24.7M for Sony.

2. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Fox) [3,597 Theaters]
Friday $3.3M (-52%), Estimated Weekend $10.2M, Estimated Cume $36M

3. The Town (Warner Bros) Week 3 [2,935 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M, Estimated Weekend $10M, Estimated Cume $64.3M

4. Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,575 Theaters]
Friday $2.6M (-41%), Estimated Weekend $9.7M, Estimated Cume $29M

5. Easy A (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 3 [2,974 Theaters]
Friday $2.3M, Estimated Weekend $7.2M, Estimated Cume $42.5M

6. Let Me In (Relativity/Overture] NEW [2,020 Theaters]
Friday $1.9M, Estimated Weekend $5.2M

It logged a "C+" Cinemascore.

7. You Again (Disney) Week 3 [2,548 Theaters]
Friday $1.7M (-37%), Estimated Weekend $5.7M, Estimated Cume $16.7M

8. Case 39 (Paramount) NEW [2,211 Theaters]
Friday $1.7M, Estmated Weekend $4.7M

This horror holdover from Paramount Vantage logged a "B-" Cinemascore. Talk about a bizarre release: Case 39 starring Renee Zellweger was made back in 2006 when Brad Weston was president of production for Paramount. (That was two top execs ago...) It had a moderate budget of $27 million. The studio opened it internationally and pic did $17M overseas. Because it did reasonably well in Mexico and Spain, Paramount decided to release it now in the United States with a very targeted marketing campaign focusing on Hispanic audiences. But it looks like it will underperform even modest studio expectations of $6M-$8M.

9. Devil (Universal) Week 3 [,392 Theaters]
Friday $1.1M, Estimated Weekend $3.5M, Estimated Cume $27.2M

10. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D (Week 4) [1,907 Theaters]
Friday $750K, Estimated Weekend $2.7M, Estimated Cume $56.5M
To note, Case 39 was better received than Let Me In via Cinemascore (B- vs C+). The B+ for Social Network is also not particularly flattering.

He was the star of Zombieland. He can't steal a movie in which he is the main character.

Although I like my Facebook, I really have no interest in seeing a movie about it. Still want to see The Town.

And if anyone stole the scenes in Zombieland it was Woody Harleson.

to Social Network. It's going to have some serious legs too.

I knew "Let Me In" was in trouble when it was playing in the largest theater room in my nearby theater, and it was about 10% filled to capacity on a Friday night. OTOH, "The Social Network"'s crowd filled up about 85% of its room last night.

I thought "Let Me In" would be doing much better, kinda surprised.

I haven't seen "Social" yet, but I'm glad to see it's doing well despite so many numbskulls immediately dismissing it as a dumb "Facebook movie". I haven't even seen it and I know there's much more to it than that.

Not only has the film been done since 2006, the DVD has been finished since February and is just waiting for a release date.

Totally agree and have said as much before. All you have to do is look at the pedigree of the film to know. People don't seem to get that "the social network" has more to do with events in the movie rather than a direct reference to Facebook.

I'm glad Let Me In bombed. Unnecessary remakes don't always = success.

Yeah, dunno why they bother trying to bring great stories to broader audiences.

Studio didn't know how to market it, and in all honesty, it is pretty terrible.

makes me wonder wtf the next Batman will make..and that big star is Batman. If a mindfuck film like Inception gets that much...the next Batman should make close to what TDK made. Maybe...more?! Jesus. I'm still amazed by Inception's gross.

The graphics and cgi can't be compared anywhere else in the world is what I'm saying and by these effects (even with shoddy story line - not pointing at any specified movie) it WILL sell quite well in foreign countries.

True, them darn foreigners can't understand the dialog anyway so they just look at the pictures.
