Bohemian Rhapsody (2018, D: Singer or Fletcher) S: Rami Malek -- Queen biopic

A film tribute to rock band Queen is being produced, prompting a battle between the biggest showbiz names desperate to be cast as the late Freddie Mercury.

The We Will Rock You musical which features the band's hits, has been a massive success. But this movie is the first ever attempt to document the charismatic singer's life. Mercury died of an Aids related illness in 1991.

The surviving members of the band - Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon - will all be involved in the project.

Guitarist May says, "There is a film in the pipeline and we're all involved in it.

"I'm not allowed to say much about it and casting isn't finalised but we've had some incredible offers to play Freddie. Really incredible."

RagingBull80 11-09-06 12:58 PM

Interesting, Who could play Freddie?

FinkPish 11-09-06 01:00 PM

How about Guy Pearce?

The Infidel 11-09-06 01:18 PM

I wonder how much of Freddie's rampant sex/drugs lifestyle will actually be portrayed onscreen. There's some pretty wild stories out there.

Spiderbite 11-09-06 03:14 PM

Could be good if they don't shy away from his sexual exploits but don't dwell on it too much either.

The most important part will be casting. If they don't get someone who can channel him like Kilmer/Morrison, it could be a disaster. Freddie was a very complicated individual in all that I have read.

Hey all,

I am a HUGE Queen fan -- I hope this movie turns out decent... Ya know, whenever I see someone that reminds me of Freddie, that are of Indian decent (as are his parents). It's mostly the distinct jaw structure that strikes the resemblance

Later,

Matt

I wasn't too much of a Queen fan, but Freddie Mercury had a fantastic singing voice.

DVD Josh 11-12-06 10:02 PM

Let's get Guy Pearce in this one. He can sing (well no one can sing like Freddy), and has a decent jawline.

 :D

Sacha Baron Cohen has actually been linked to Freddie Mercury biopics long before the current Boratmania.

He even has a joke about Borat entering a Mercury lookalike contest.

PopcornTreeCt 11-12-06 11:06 PM

It would make sense for Sacha Baron Cohen to play him considering his stock is pretty high right now.

DonnachaOne 11-13-06 04:38 AM

Why not? COuld be his Man On The Moon.

Groucho 11-13-06 08:51 AM

My money is on Hugh Jackman, although my personal preference is John Barrowman.

Maybe just use him for the later years...when Freddie is gaunt and dying of AIDS.

Hugh Jackman, are you kidding? He look nothing at all like Freddie Mercury.

Groucho 11-13-06 10:28 AM

But Jackman is an A-list star, and he can sing.

iggystar 11-13-06 10:54 AM

Trust me, I love Hugh Jackman, but their look is so dissimilar that it would be distracting. Guy Pearce...

An actor's status is not important, and vocals can be dubbed into the movie, being sung by another music artist (which is done all the time with other biopics of music stars). But the actor MUST have a facial striking resemblance of the person they portraying, to be totally convincing in the role.

Perkinsun Dzees 11-14-06 05:36 AM

A Freddie Mercury bio could be cool.

Now if only they would do one on the late great Farrokh Bulsara, with Shahrukh Khan playing the lead.

The Infidel 11-14-06 11:46 AM

^ Good one. ;)

Countless successful biopics where the actor in question looked nothing like the person they were portraying suggests otherwise. Not to mention that a little prosthetics can go a long way.

Um...if you have seen any biopics lately you'll notice an actors' status totally outweighs the importance of having a resemblence to the real person.
