Easy A (2010)

I could not find a thread on this. Normally, I would ignore what appears to be another entry in a genre that I hold little interest in, but I happened to read Jake Coyle's flattering review this morning (I assume he saw it at the Toronto Film Festival). Also, any film that features the likes of Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow together is probably worth seeing.

"Easy A" — High school teenager Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) breezes through phrases like "terminal illogical inexactitude," makes elaborate Google Earth metaphors and does it all without arrogance or even an upturned eyebrow. She is, in short, way out of any teenage boy's league. Olive accidentally develops a reputation as an "easy" girl after — to satiate her badgering best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) — she lies about losing her virginity. The rumour, spread by the school's resident religious zealot Marianne (Amanda Bynes), moves at the speed of Twitter. Like a young actor, Olive embraces the role, even pinning a red "A'' to her provocative outfits in an ode to Hester Prynne. For all its Hawthorne quoting, "Easy A" is clearly the stepchild of John Hughes. Will Gluck's stylish direction of Bert V. Royal's nimble, word-stuffed script results in a whip-smart film. It's a terrifically deadpan, lively performance from Stone, but the adults nearly steal the film. With Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow. PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen sexuality, language and some drug material. 93 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Reviews have been fairly strong, and I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed Fired Up. Will watch this down the line.

Originally I was planning to let this film slip by me, but upon reading that review I'm actually quite intrigued. Rental for sure.

This reminds me that the trailer for this should be on the list of "tired of seeing that trailer."

Sounds like JUNO: lots of implausibly clever dialogue and word-play, but without the pregnancy. And without Ellen Page. And since, all the alleged slut action is made up, no sex scenes. I'll pass.

I saw this a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. I thought it gave off a strong Mean Girls vibe. Stanley Tucci was very funny and pretty much stole all his scenes. I give it a B.

So apparently it wasn't an Easy A.

I saw The Town this past Monday, so I will probably check this out this weekend.

I'm looking forward to this. It looks very good. And it doesn't hurt that I have a huge crush on Emma Stone. :)

I think this looks worth a rental anyway. I doubt I would go to the theater to see it but I want to see it at some point.

I also like the casting of her Mom and Dad.

This. All the clips I've seen make it look like the film is trying WAY too hard to be the next Juno. Stone is hot, though...

I love Emma Stone, but the trailers turned me off of this one. Maybe a rental... after Netflix shows up in Canada.

I'm not sure what you guys are seeing, but I don't see anything close to resembling Juno from this.

Re: Easy A (2010)

I don't see the Juno connection at all either.

I first saw Emma Stone in Superbad and thought she was cute and right away saw that she could get bigger roles down the road. Since then I've seen her in 5 other movies and while they weren't all great films, she comes across as very likeable and I can actually see some acting chops in her (ie. Paper Man).

Easy A looks alright for the type of movie it is, and I'll see it when it's out on DVD - mainly for Emma Stone. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie does some decent numbers at the boxoffice - which would probably kick her career up a couple notches.

The reviews on this site didn't help. A 1 star and a 4 star. I mean that's a HUGE difference of opinion and only made me more confused if we should squeeze this into a weekend double feature with Affleck's "The Town."

Emma Stone is hot, but not in the traditional Angelina, Charlize, Jennifer Connelly way. Or closer to her age, someone like Amanda Seyfried. She's got a unique look, she's funny, Bill Murray singled her out as having great talent and it's not like they had a lot of scenes together, and she's someone you could imagine having a real shot with if you were around her age.

Hopefully, Ebert has a review on this to break the tie, but if it's bad or the movie tanks this weekend, I, like others here, will rent it just for Stone when it's released on Blu.

Ebert - 3 1/2 of 4 Stars.

I think it may always be necessary that we like the hero or heroine of a comedy. I certainly liked Olive. I'm pretty sure that's also how an actor becomes a movie star.

My wife's friend wants to see this. She's our movie buddy, so we'll be seeing it next week some time.

Looks good -- Emma Stone has been great in everything I've seen her in -- but not the sort of thing I go to see in a theater.

But now we're going to see 2 movies on Saturday. A rare double feature for us. Just need to find the times tomorrow that work best to see The Town and Easy A.

I wonder if one would be better to see after the other. Maybe the more serious film and then a lighter/comedic film after?

My better half has expressed interest in seeing this, so I'll be going along. Can't say that I have high expectations for it, but maybe it'll surprise me.

I'm not a fan of Emma Stone, and don't think she's hot.
