Weekend Box Office (9/3-9/6): Even the toughest Mexican can't take down an American

From Deadline Hollywood:

1. Machete (Fox) NEW [2,670 Theaters]
Friday $3.9M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $14M)

2. The American (Focus Features) NEW [2,823 Theaters] Opened Wed
Friday $3.8M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $16M, Estimated Cume $15M

3. Takers (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,206 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M (-60%), Estimated 4-Day Holiday $14M, Estimated Cume $40M

4. The Last Exorcism (Lionsgate) Week 2 [2,874 Theaters]
Friday $2.3M (-76%), Estimated 4-Day Holiday $10M, Estimated Cume $34.8M

5. Going The Distance (Warner Bros) NEW [3,030 Theaters]
Friday $2.2M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $9M

6. The Expendables (Lionsgate) Week 4 [3,398 Theaters]
Friday $1.7M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $8.2M, Estimated Cume $94M

7. Eat Pray Love (Sony) Week 4 [2,663 Theaters]
Friday $1.5M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $7.5M, Estimated Cume $72M

8. The Other Guys (Sony) Week 5 [2,607 Theaters]
Friday $1.5M, Estimated 4-Day Holiday $7.5M, Estimated Cume $109M

**************************************************************

I wish Machete had opened to a bigger #, but that's still damn impressive when you consider the cast involved. Overall, though, it's a sluggish weekend with little to draw people in. It's looking like Expendables might be able to squeeze out $100m after all.

Edit: added refined #s for Friday.

No doubt about that. I'd read something that said producers sold off some rights to it for $2m so they were ahead before the movie was even released.

Sorry, I should have specified that these are Friday numbers only. Rankings will likely change after Mon.

I'm not surprised at Machete, there were only 4 other people in the theater other than me and my 2 friends

You mean an ultra-violent movie based on a trailer in a movie that nobody saw, starring a near 70 year old actor that nobody knows didn't beat out George Clooney?

I think the word of mouth will be bad for The American. I enjoyed it despite some script flaws, but I overheard a number of people say "that was terrible" after the movie ended. It's not a film for the mainstream...not to mention the trailer sold it as an action movie to the average joe.

If that's true, then next year we can expect a film teaming Eric Roberts and Danny Trejo.

Actually, that would be pretty damned cool.

A movie named "The American" opened as obvious counterprogramming against "Machete" ("The Mexican")? This is the most racist thing I've heard since I was on the Political Forum a few minutes ago! I hope Machete wins. Because that movie is not racist.

I updated the OP with those figures, but I have little doubt Clooney will take the weekend. Too bad, as I would've loved to see Trejo open a film at #1.

Love the tag line... but I also hoped Machete would have done better it was a lot of fun. But there were only a handful at the theater today when I saw it. Maybe 12 or so.

Bottom line no Tea Party movie goer will want to see any of these two movies.

Are they waiting for something important like Glenn Beck Blow His Nose: The Movie?

Ah, man. I was expecting to see in the thread title either:

- George Clooney Fucks with the Wrong Mexican (if Machete won)
or
- At Least One American Can Fuck with the Wrong Mexican (if The American won)

Consider me disappointed.

The Tea Party crosses all demographics, only the epic hatred of Clooney and Trejo unifies them.

I've been seeing TV spots this weekend proclaiming that "Takers is the #1 movie in America!"

Could this battle be a symbolism that immigration might be destroyed?
