Have you seen Memories of Underdevelopment? It's by the same director.

I saw that for the class I had in the spring. It was pretty good.

Santos!
No actually, fantastic Bunuel (en espanol): Simon Of The Desert, Viridiana. Fantastic Almodovar: Matador for absolute outrageousness, Broken Embraces and Bad Education for his more mature storytelling craft (and Penelope...sigh).
And Jodorowsky: El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre too. (fun fact: he lost the job directing Dune to David Lynch.)
And one obscurity: Vampires In Havana. 'Nuff said.

Pan's Labrynth is my favorite, but I grew up in a household that watched EL Santo movies, so those always hold a special place in my heart. Instructions Not Included was pretty good too.

Re: What are your favorite Spanish language films?

Motorcycle Diaries is a great film. Don't know if that was brought up here.

Cantinflas

Great films. Wonderful word play that I don't think translating could even get right cuz of the cultural nature of it. Man, those things were a blast when they played on Univisión back in the early 1990s.

I also remember watching sooooooooo many crazy mexploitation flicks. So horrible yet so good. He'll, Univisión played those a lot. What movies do they play now?

I'd count Che as a film to watch too. Soderbergh did solid on that one. Always fascinates me when a director makes a film in a language that don't speak it.

I have to agree with most of the choices that have been offered, and I'd like to mention one that hasn't been brought up yet: BOCA A BOCA (MOUTH TO MOUTH). It's a screwball comedy from 1995 starring Javier Bardem. Another one that I don't think has been mentioned yet: WHO CAN KILL A CHILD?
