I can't believe he thinks Star Trek: The Motion Picture is that great. Concept-wise it's great but it was too rich; there was no need for some of those long, drawn-out shots when they enter V'ger.
I do hope that a new Trek TV series is developed because he's right about the dumbing-down of the source material.

Now that you mention it, I think I started one of those and stopped it after hearing his voice and seeing the length. I'll have to go back and check it.

I just can't believe that he can fill up an hour and a half with just one review.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is his favorite Star Trek film ever. Not even most people who love Star Trek: The Motion Picture consider it their favorite Star Trek film ever.

He's right about TMP. It's defintitely the most "sci-fi" of the Trek films. They became more action movies that happened to be set in space after that one.

The movie was sadly the victim of the studio wanting to get a film out there before "Empire Strikes Back"

Re: Redlettermedia Review - Star Trek (2009)
But it wasn't even good "sci-fi;" there was little exposition on V'ger, the vast knowledge it had from traveling the cosmos was never divulged, set pieces were just "there" and never had much depth and really everything took place at the last 30 minutes.
Compare that to Wise's The Andromeda Strain were there was tons of dialogue explaining Andromeda, the structural changes shown via the electron microscope, the various compounds that were tested to combat it, the hypothesis on acidosis; the set pieces actually did something to further the plot along in addition to the epileptic induction.
I appreciate what Roddenberry and Wise were trying to do but it wasn't enough, depth-wise.

True. Paramount was stupid for meddling with Wise and treating him like he didn't know what he was doing. You don't direct "West Side Story," "Sound of Music," "Sand Pebbles," "The Day the Earth Stood Still," and other great films if you are incompetent.

But it didn't do what they intended it to do: Get the same returns Star Wars had. Hence they actioned it up for Khan to get it more Star Warsy

i loved how he ripped the terrible writing in part 2 of his review. the engine room does mirror beer vats. spock watching vulcan get destroyed on a nearby moon when vulcan has no moons. uhura was always making mistakes and was never great at her job but in the reboot she's ultra genius. nero not needing earth's defense codes but does whe he sees that the young spock is on the enterprise. the asian guy not knowing how to drive...lol. the old video of showing nimoy telling the viewers how the writers get with nasa to get the scientific data as close as possible and plinkett cutting to the star going supernova and vulcan going bye bye. perfect review. he praised it for being a good ol' popcorn sci-fi action movie and then proceeded to rip it for the bad writing and character mishaps.

I'm surprised he didn't mention that the reason they look like beer vats... is because they are beer vats- part of Star Trek 2009 was shoot at the Budweiser plant in the San Fernando Valley (just off the 405).
